  • I am urging you, as my representative, to not only act on these demands, but hold the Trustee Board accountable for the racism that has been perpetrated
  • The experiences outlined by former Student Trustee Ahona Mehdi have illustrated the complicity of the entire board of Trustees in allowing racism to fester at the highest level of our community’s school board
  • As your constituent, I do not have faith that the decisions Trustees make are grounded in an anti-oppresive, anti-racist lens, and more importantly, that the trustees at HWDSB can meaningfully serve our student population
  • CBC released an article confirming that quote,“Trustees Carole Paikin Miller, Kathy Archer and Becky Buck all voted during a special board meeting on Tuesday to not issue sanctions or reprimands against themselves. They also voted to keep their names out of the public copy of a third-party report that says they contributed to a dynamic that marginalized and silenced a former student trustee.”

  • How can we trust you as the board to be accountable to your actions, if your members can use their powers to avoid consequences for perpetuating violence and racism in the HWDSB?
  • How can we trust the board of trustees when your members are actively breaching the Education Act and the Trustee Code of Conduct?
  • What have you done/will you do to ensure that our demands are met?
  • Will you be putting forward a motion to ensure that our demands are met?
  • Moving forward, how will you ensure that students & community are centered in this process?

Demands (for reference):

We are demanding that an emergency motion be put forward at the trustee meeting on February 8th that demands:

  • As per section 218.3(3) of the education act, we demand that the HWDSB board of trustees apply complete sanctions including: barring Becky Buck, Kaathy Archer, Carole Paikin Miller and Alex Johnstone from attending all future board meetings, committee meetings and other trustee duties.

  • We demand that the HWDSB board of trustees pass a motion requesting the Ministry of Education, as per section 230.12(4) of the education act, to step in for the immediate and permanent impeachment of Becky Buck, Kathy Archer, Carole Paikin-Miller and Alex Johnstone.
