Year 4 Team Newsletter

Term 1 - 2015

Kia Ora Parents/Caregivers

Welcome to a new year at Elm Park School. We trust that you have had a relaxing break and have managed to enjoy the summer sun!

The Year 4 classes for 2015 are as follows:

Room 13 with Ms Lisa Biddick

Room 14 with Mrs Sue Dane

Room 28 with Mrs Anna Graham and Ms Sara Melville

We are looking forward to an exciting year in the Year 4 team.  Already our calendar is filling up with important dates.

Parent Information Evening

We invite all parent to attend an evening to meet their child’s teacher.  Please meet in the Auditorium on Wednesday 18 February 2015 at 6.00pm.  At this meeting we will discuss expectations for homework, behaviour, uniform, and will outline learning for the year.

Following this meeting, there will be an information session about BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).  At Elm Park School this year, five classes will be trialling this option and students in these classes will be offered the choice to bring along a specified laptop to school later in the year.  Parents of Room 28/29 are invited to meet in the Auditorium at 7.00pm, where we will outline what the trial will involve and the requirements for participating.  Please note that BYOD is only an option and it is not an expectation that any parents purchase the specified device unless they choose to.  All students will continue to have access to school-owned ICT equipment whether or not they are in a BYOD trial class.

Inquiry

Term 1’s Inquiry work is centred around Learning Focussed Relationships. The students will be learning about how to get the most out of their learning - being confident enough to take risks, ask questions and keep trying even when it’s difficult.

We also have visits from the Life Education Van booked for Weeks 8 and 9 this term.

e-Portfolios

These are work in progress by the students and the teachers. Your child’s log-in and password remain the same as last year.  In the next few weeks your child will be beginning to contribute new work.  Please take time to share and discuss this with your child.

For your convenience, we can arrange for you to be emailed each time new work is uploaded.  If you would like this set up, please contact either the office or your class teacher.  We also encourage you to leave comments on the work that you view.  The students love to receive your feedback.  Student e-Portfolios can be accessed on the Class Pages via the school website.  We recommend bookmarking this link for easy future access!

Homework

The primary focus for homework in Year 4 is setting a strong foundation of basic skills.  We encourage students to read daily (approximately 20 minutes) and to practise their Maths on Mathletics (this includes basic facts and revision of in-class learning).

Lines of Communication

We are keen to establish strong home-school relationships with our families.   If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, we recommend first making an appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.  Should you wish to discuss things further, appointments are available with our Deputy Principal, Belinda Johnston.

We look forward to a great term and meeting all parents and caregivers in the next few weeks.
