Madame Berthelot^[1] has just rung me up to ask if you would come with me to her house next Monday at about 5 o’clock to meet the Maharajah of Patiala^[2] and his beautiful wife?

The Maharaj it seems has never been painted before

[1] Probably Madame Philippe Berthelot, née Hélène Constance Linder (1867-1955), wife of the French diplomat Philippe Berthelot (1866-1934). The Berthelots lived at 13, boulevard des Invalides.

[2] Maharaja Sir Bhupinder Singh (1891-1938), ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala from 1900 to 1938.
