Lightning Talks

In a lightning talk each speaker gets 5 minutes and 15 slides (20 seconds per slide) to share their ideas. If you’ve never given a talk before, we'd like to hear from you all the same.

Why should I give a talk?

Whether you're new to public speaking, or already experienced, lightning talks are a great opportunity to learn, practice and improve on skills which you can use give more formal presentations.

But this event is also about having fun, and sharing thoughts and ideas. ORG London members have interesting jobs, projects and hobbies. We'd like this to kick start many conversations that benefit the group, its members and the Open Rights Group community.

Are there any rules? Yes: Our Guidelines for Speakers and Audience

This is a community event, rather than a chance to vent. We want our speakers to be listened to and for you to be able to constructively contribute if you come along on the night.

Rules for the audience

We think this will be a great evening of talks and hope everyone enjoys it. We definitely don’t anticipate problems, but want to reassure everyone that we’re dedicated to providing a harassment-free environment for everyone. This is regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), etc.

What a great idea! How do I give a talk to ORG London?

Each set of talks has a theme. The theme for this month's talks is ‘Campaigning and Activism’:

If you have ideas or experience on the theme of ‘Campaigning and Activism’ which you'd like to share with the group, we definitely want to hear from you! By ‘Campaigning and Activism’ we mean experience of campaigning and spreading the word about an issue you care about, e.g. a big campaign win you were involved in or a campaign loss that you learnt something from or something in the middle. It does not have to be about UK-based activism focused on digital rights or the work of Open Rights Group.

Remember, no experience of public speaking is necessary. This is about starting a conversation, not giving the perfect speech.

Submit your talk idea by submitting this google form by Monday 7th September.
