RSS Marae Experience

• Russell Street School • 17 February 2015

Parents/Caregivers,

As a context of learning for this term we will once again be visiting Te Ahu A Turanga Marae in Woodville.  As the Marae is only able to accommodate a certain number, we have decided to combine buddy classes with their senior counterparts. The senior buddies (Rooms 6,7,11,12,13,14) will stay the night, while the junior buddies will be back at school by 3pm on the day of their trip.   As you can imagine this experience will be valuable to all of our children and give them an insight to life on a Marae.  Our children will be engaged in a number of activities on the Marae. Our senior students will be responsible for preparing meals, setting tables, clearing and cleaning up.  All valuable life skills!

Rooms 11, 2, 14 and 8 will be travelling to the Marae on Tuesday 17th March.  Rooms 2 and 8 will return to school by 3pm on that day.  Rooms 11 and 14 will stay the night together.  They will welcome the next group of children to the Marae on the following day and walk the new Gorge Loop on the way home.  They will return to school early afternoon.  Rooms 6, 3, 12, and 9 will be travelling to the Marae on Wednesday 18th March.  Rooms 3, and 9 will return to school by 3pm on that day.  Rooms 6 and 12 will stay the night together.  They will welcome the next group of children to the Marae on the following day and walk the new Gorge Loop on the way home.  They will return to school early afternoon.  Rooms 7, 5, 13 and 10 will be travelling to the Marae on Thursday 19th March.  Rooms  5 and 10 will return to school by 3pm on that day.  Rooms 7 and 13 will stay the night together.  They will walk the new Gorge Loop on the way home.  They will return to school early afternoon.

We will require parents to join us.  Attached to this letter is a form to apply to be a Marae parent. Please fill this in carefully as we will be looking for parents with special qualities and skills to enhance the marae experience for our children.

The cost for our trip is $22 per senior student and $10 per junior student.  A   significant portion of this is covered by the activity fee, although we are asking families of the senior team to please contribute an additional $12 to cover food, transport and overnight Marae costs. To assist we have made an application to a trust for the travel portion.

If you have any immediate queries, please see Rosie, James or Nic.
