The Sermon on the Mount

The Beatitudes and Our Hope

Matthew 5:1-10

————————————————————————————————————————

This week we kicked off a brand new series that will take us through The Sermon on the Mount, sometimes referred to as “the greatest sermon”, in Matthew chapters 5-7. In his sermon, Jesus starts by focusing on the ethical dimension of the Christian life. What he’s trying to get at is the character that lives within you.

Read Matthew 5:1-10. The beginning statements of each verse are talking about who is blessed, and they are like an invitation to the disadvantaged. Jesus is making the point that we don’t need to rely on the power structures of this world, but only on the Kingdom of God.

• What does the world say we should focus and lean on?
• How do you lean on the Kingdom of God?
• How can we be in the world, but not a part of it, and still love people?

The second half of each statement focuses on the blessing…

• What is Jesus getting at by saying “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”?
