Dear PCCC Members and friends,
I want to share an experience I had this week. Many of you might have heard of Alan Law, the retired teacher who has handed out homemade meat and cheese sandwiches amongst other things to the homeless late at night when all the shelters are closed. He hands out 300 sandwiches a night and handed out more than 520,000 sandwiches last year. My daughter’s latchkey program at Sonnesyn Elementary School has an annual sandwich night where the children and parents donate supplies and make sandwiches. Monday we made 340 sandwiches individually bagged in Ziploc bags. This will provide Alan with a night’s worth of sandwiches for the homeless. You may ask why I am writing to you about sandwiches and homeless folk. Let me tell you how proud each of those young kids were. They truly understand what it means to be privileged and compassionate. They felt blessed for what they have and concerned about those who did not have food to eat. I truly witnessed God working through many to be servants to our brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. This is what Christianity is about.
One thing we know by faith is that God wants us to have peace of mind, and wants us to know the joys of being generous just as those kids were able to experience. “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21. It was easy to see where those kid’s hearts were Monday evening.
Of course, God showers grace everywhere, but Disciples are called to be especially discerning and cooperative wit
h this divine grace. Every week through prayer, presence, service and witness we at Plymouth Creek Christian Church develop our faith, assist the poor, visit the sick, support people in times of trial, worship God and address needs near and far through our connection to the Upper Midwest Disciples of Christ and the National Disciples of Christ. At least once a year we remind ourselves that the generosity we share with the world through our church, is a direct result of the generosity that is shared with our church by its members and friends. Many thanks for your current and past support of Plymouth Creek Christian Church.
Today I ask that you evaluate where your treasures lie and where you find your heart to be. I ask that you consider your generosity to the church and pledge to give for the coming year. We use these pledges as a basis to project what we can expect for the coming year’s budget. It is important that every member of the church pledge what you can and know that these pledges are not written in stone. I understand that times are tough and uncertainty continues to loom over our heads. I also understand that your giving changes as your financial situation changes. However, we always find a way to give a little more whether it is our treasures or talents. We would love to have your pledges by Sunday, June 12th.
Thank you so much!
Blessings to Each and All,
Russell Walker, PCCC Board President
