# Category Weighting Examples

### Canvas uses Proportional Weight when determining grades in a weighted category. Here’s an example of how that works for a Tests category:

Example 1: All the same points possible

Test A | 100 | 100 |

Test B | 90 | 100 |

Test C | 80 | 100 |

Equal Weight (number of assignments)

(100% + 90% + 80%) / 3 (number of assignments) = 90%

Proportional Weight (number of points possible)

(total points earned/total points possible)100/100 + 90/100 + 80/100 = 270/300 = 90%

Example 2: Different points possible

Test A | 100 | 100 |

Test B | 90 | 100 |

Test C-1 | 40 | 50 |

Test C-2 | 40 | 50 |

Equal Weight (number of assignments)

(100% + 90% + 80% + 80%) / 4 (number of assignments) = 87.5%

Proportional Weight (number of points possible)

(total points earned/total points possible) 100/100/ + 90/100 + 40/50 + 40/50 = 270/300 = 90%

# Weighted Grades Example

### In this example, the final grade is going to based on two categories: 30% for assignments and 70% for tests. Here’s how the student’s final grade is determined by Canvas:

Example 3

| Student Score |
| Weight |
| Score |

Assignments | 100% | X | 30% | = | 30% |

Tests | 90% | X | 70% | = | 63% |

Final Grade | 93% |
