Scholarships
Scholarship Procedures & Information
- All scholarships that we receive are processed and communicated to students via students’ Oak Hill email accounts.
- All scholarship application requirements are to be completed by the student. Typing the application is always preferred.
- If the student needs any documents from the guidance office to complete the scholarship, see the guidance office secretary to attain these documents. These documents could include transcripts, test scores, or other important documentation necessary concerning your academics.
- If the student needs a written recommendation for a scholarship, s/he should have that request to his/her guidance counselor a minimum of FIVE (5) DAYS before s/he needs the recommendation completed. The counselors are often scheduled out of the office, as well as other priority issues that may delay their ability to get to your application needs right away.
Helpful Hints to Improving Your Chances for Earning Scholarships
- Make good grades.
- Have a good attendance record.
- Have a good discipline record.
- Be very involved in school activities, athletics, and clubs.
- Be very active in community activities and church.
- Be involved in as many leadership positions as possible; attend leadership conferences and seminars.
- Get as much work experience as possible.
- It is imperative that you be continually involved in community service projects and activities. For ideas to be involved, see the list below.
- Always be sure to type all materials to be turned in for any scholarship, including the application. Handwritten applications tell the selection committee that you are too lazy to take the time to produce a professional looking document.
- Be sure to have all scholarship materials completed and turned in to your counselor at least five days prior to any “postmark” deadline and two weeks prior to any “received by” deadline. Our school mail is picked up by 9 a.m. each day so anything mailed after 9 a.m. will not go out until the next day.
- Be punctual. Be early. That will say something about you.
- Have a completed resumé on file with Mr. Law by November 1. Your resumé is used for several items out of the guidance office, such as: consideration for other scholarships; helping teachers write quality reference letters for you; and college applications. You can find templates for Google Docs by using the following link: Public Templates. Be sure to save the resumé so you can correct and update as your year progresses.
- Be sure to always check all spelling and grammar of all documentation you produce and turn in.
- I process literally every scholarship I receive throughout the school year and make them available to our students. However, there are thousands of other scholarships available that never come across my desk. You may actively pursue these other scholarships free of charge on many websites that are listed on our website. Simply go to the guidance website, click on “other links,” and go to the scholarship section of the chart. There are more than 18 different scholarship sites listed. You should never need to pay for a scholarship search. There are plenty of free searching sites out there to use.
