NEW TREES PLANTED IN FRONT OF THE PARK

Today the Jersey City Department of Parks and Forestry supervised the planting of four Japanese Zelkova trees in front of our park. Thank you kindly to Director Mark Redfield for this early holiday gift. Now it is up to us to to care for our beautiful new trees by protecting their bark. So please, do not lean bicycles against them. Be careful with your car’s doors. Never pierce them with sharp objects like tacks or staples. Be kind to our trees. From May to October we will need to arrange to give them 15 gallons of water each once a week if it does not rain at least 1”. Please consider volunteering to do this. To learn more about caring for new trees copy and paste this link into a browser. http://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/tree-care

Below is information about our new trees. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=a927

Zelkova serrata, commonly called Japanese zelkova, is a medium to large deciduous tree, typically growing to 50-80’ tall with a spreading, generally upward-branching, vase-shaped crown. It is native to Japan, Taiwan and eastern China. It is noted for its graceful shape, clean foliage, attractive bark and resistance to Dutch elm disease. Zelkova has in fact been promoted in recent years as a substitute for American elm (Ulmus americana) because of its resistance to Dutch elm disease. Insignificant small green flowers appear in spring as the foliage emerges. Flowers give way to small, non-showy, ovate, wingless drupes that ripen in autumn. Oblong-elliptic medium green leaves (to 3” long) with coarse, ciliate marginal teeth and acuminate tips. Fall color is variable, ranging from undistinguished yellow to attractive shades of yellow-orange to red-brown. Smooth gray bark in youth exfoliates with age to reveal orange-brown inner bark.

Work on Route 139:

Work on Route 139 will be causing significant disturbance on the the Palisade Ave crossing as they make repairs to the bridge. The work is due to start at the beginning of November, according to NJ DOT

Beginning October 26th, there will be some advance utility work (PSE&G) at Palisade Ave and Route 139.  This will temporarily impact northbound traffic through the intersection for approximately 2-5 days.  Southbound motorists and pedestrian traffic will be maintained during this work.  NJDOT has coordinated with Jersey City Police to assist motorists/pedestrians.  The next project e-Alert will include this information, I just wanted to give you a heads up.”

The S.A.N.A. board is meeting with representatives of the NJ Department of Transportation later this month to express disappointment about the of lack of communication with the neighborhood and offer our concerns about the closing and route decisions.

CLOSING OF PALISADE AVE:

The Sgt Anthony Park Neighborhood Association has formally contacted Mr. Neu at the NJ Department of Transport expressing our objection to the closing of Palisade Ave for “many months”.  We have requested an information session with our members and a traffic plan that has detailed alternate routes that is agreed upon by our membership.

The current traffic plan permits the crossing of Rt.139 at Palisade Ave to be simultaneously closed with other North/South passageways and not only closes off much of The Heights to the rest of Jersey City, but will likely increase emergency response times.

Residents are urged to voice their objections by contacting Eric Neu at the NJ DOT:
