1 When he finished praying in a certain place,[1] one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just[2] as John also[3] taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say,
‘Father,[4]
may your name be kept holy.[5]
3 Give us day by day our daily bread.[8]
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves also[9] forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
Lead[10] us not into temptation.[11]
5 He said to them, “Which of you, if you go to a friend at midnight,[12] and say to[13] him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 for a friend of mine has come to me from[14] a journey, and I have nothing to set before him,’ 7 and he from within will answer and say, ‘Do not bother me.[15] The door is now[16] shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot[17] get up and give you anything?’[18] 8 I tell you, although he will not rise and give it to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence,[19] he will get up[20] and give him whatever he needs.[21]
9 “I tell you, keep asking,[22] and it will be given you. Keep seeking,[23] and you will find. Keep knocking,[24] and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, [25] if his son[26] asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?[27] 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?[28] 13 If you then, being[29] evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the[30] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”[31]
14 He was casting out[32] a demon, and it was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the multitudes[33] marveled.[34] 15 But some of them said, “He casts[35] out demons by Beelzebul, the prince[36] of the demons.” 16 Others, to test him,[37] sought[38] from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste[39] and a divided household falls.[40] 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast[41] out demons by Beelzebul. 19 But if I cast[42] out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your children[43] cast them out?[44] Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if I by God’s finger[45] cast[46] out demons, then the kingdom of God[47] has come upon[48] you.
21 “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace,[49] his goods[50] are safe. 22 But when someone stronger[51] attacks him and overcomes[52] him, he takes from him his whole armor[53] in which he trusted, and divides[54] his plunder.[55]
23 “He that is not with me is against me. He who does not gather with me scatters.
24 “The unclean spirit, when it[56] has gone out of a person,[57] passes through waterless[58] places, seeking[59] rest, and finding none,[60] it[61] says, ‘I will return[62] to my house from which I came out.’[63] 25 When it[64] returns, it[65] finds it[66] swept and put in order. 26 Then it[67] goes, and takes seven other spirits more evil than itself,[68] and they enter[69] in and dwell there. The last state of that man[70] becomes[71] worse than the first.”[72]
27 It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude[73] lifted up[74] her voice, and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!”[75]
28 But he said, “On the contrary, blessed[76] are those who hear the word of God, and keep[77] it.”
29 When the crowds[78] were increasing,[79] he began to say, “This is an evil generation.[80] It seeks[81] after[82] a sign. No sign will be given to it but[83] the sign of Jonah.[84] 30 For even[85] as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be[86] to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise up at[87] the judgment with the men[88] of this generation, and will[89] condemn them: for[90] she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something[91] greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men[92] of Nineveh will stand up at[93] the judgment with this generation, and will[94] condemn it: for[95] they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something[96] greater than Jonah is here.
33 “No one, when he has lit[97] a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket,[98] but on a stand,[99] that those who come in[100] may see the light. 34 The lamp of the body is the eye.[101] Therefore when your eye is good,[102] your whole body is [103] full of light; but when it is evil,[104] your body also[105] is full of darkness.[106] 35 Therefore see whether[107] the light that is in you is not[108] darkness. 36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, having no part dark,[109] it will be wholly[110] full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining[111] gives you light.”[112]
37 Now as he[113] spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine[114] with him. He went in, and reclined[115] at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was astonished[116] that he had not first washed himself before dinner.[117] 39 The[118] Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish,[119] but your inside[120] is full of greediness[121] and wickedness. 40 Fools![122] Did not he[123] who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give for gifts[124] [125] those things which are within, and behold, everything[126] will be clean to you.[127] 42 But woe to you Pharisees! For[128] you tithe[129] mint and rue and every herb,[130] but you neglect justice and the love of God.[131] You ought to have done these,[132] and not to have left the other undone.[133] 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you![134] For[135] you are like unmarked[136] graves, and the people[137] who walk over them don’t know it.”
45 One of the lawyers[138] answered him,[139] “Teacher, in saying these things[140] you insult us also.”
46 He said, “Woe to you lawyers[141] also! For[142] you load people[143] with burdens that are hard to bear,[144] and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers![145] 47 Woe to you! For[146] you build the tombs of the prophets, and[147] your fathers killed them. 48 So[148] you are witnesses[149] and consent to[150] the deeds[151] of your fathers. For[152] they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore[153] also the wisdom of God[154] said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; and[155] some of them they will kill and persecute, 50 that the blood of all the prophets, which was[156] shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of[157] this generation; 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.’[158] Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation. 52 Woe to you lawyers![159] For[160] you have taken[161] away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering!”[162]
53 As he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly angry, and to draw many things out of him;[163] 54 lying in wait for him, and seeking[164] to catch him in something he might say.[165]
