This is one of two portrait drawings de László executed of André Maurois with a view to illustrating an article devoted to the French writer in Everyman. De László’s intention was to keep the original drawing as a memento of the writer, whose work he admired.

However, during their unique sitting, de László, besides drawing a second portrait [6292] went on to paint a study portrait in oil that was finally reproduced in Everyman [6284].
