LED Turn Signal Reminders

I decided to add a couple of LED turns signal reminders to my Burgman 650 as I kept forgetting to reset them on occasions.

I opted to make my own out of simple off the shelf LED clusters that cost about 10 cents each.

Total cost for this project was around $#.00 and that included all the parts.

Making your own LED strips may not be a viable option for everybody, however, you can purchase off the shelf LED strips and use this DIY for the wiring and tapping aspect of the project.

Below is my parts list:

Parts List

I purchased a few LED clusters from an electronic supply store for 10 cents each.

I used very thin wires, black and red, to connect all the LEDs together.

I used two pole connectors to connect the positive (+) and ground (-) wires together

I used heat shrink to waterproof and protect the wires

I used a small box as a junction box to hold the Left / Right and Console wires for the Turn Signal Reminders

I also wanted a very unobtrusive setup that would be barely noticeable.

I couldn’t find the stup that I wanted so I built my own from some LED clusters that I had purchased.

One small LED reminder for each mirror and a slightly bigger one for the dash area.

I had to add a resistor to my LED strip to compensate for the OEM harness voltage.

I added the resistor to a strip of wire that I would use for tapping into the turn signal power connector.

You will not need any resistors for commercially made LED strips, most are made to run on 12 volts.

I wanted the turn signal reminders to blink, be active regardless of which turn signal was being used, left or right, and wired everything to that end.

I tapped into the Left / Right turn signal wires through the turn signal bulb power connector and carried forward the wires to a central junction box where I joined / wired everything together for all three reminders.

This setup gave me three visual reminders, one on the Left, one on the Right and one on top of the handlebars where I have my voltmeters located.

Below are the installation steps I followed to complete the project:

Preparation / Planning

Plan ahead and put your design together.

Do you just want LED reminders on either mirror or do you want additional LED reminders on the handlebars or other locations?

You won’t have to remove any tupperware for a simple two LED Reminder strips, LEFT / RIGHT.

You can just pop out the lens on the mirror and tap into the existing power connector and place your LED strip in the desired location and route the wires behind the mirror.

For a more advanced LED reminder designs, you may need to route some wires which will probably require removing some basic tupperware to gain access to the empty space under the dash.

At a minum you will need to remove the following tupperware, especially if you are going to perform a similar installation as mine:

 Handlebar Covers

 Front Panel

Note: I performed my installation while I had most of the front end tupperware off for a fork oil change.

DIY - LED Turn Signal Reminders

Step

Installation Procedure

The installation procedure is the same for either mirror, Left or Right.

Once done with one mirror, repeat the procedure for the other mirror.

1.

Put the scooter on the center stand.

2.

Fold out the mirror and remove the Turn Signal Lens

 Mirror Lens

  • Remove the Turn Signal Lens
  • Disconnect the power connector for the lens
  • Put the Lens aside

3.

Install your Mirror LED Turn Signal Reminder

  • Pick a location for your LED strip reminder.
  • Position and adhere your LED strip reminder to the desired location
  • Route the cable for the LED strip around the mirror
  • Pull the LED strip wires through the lens housing and let it hang out
  • Make sure you know which wire is the positive (+) wire and which is the ground wire (-)

4.

Route the carry forward cable for the Console / Handlebar LED strip

Note: skip this step if you are not adding additional reminders beside those in the mirrors.

  • Lift the mirror Rubber housing to expose the hole as seen in the picture below:

  • Route your carry forward wire, the one that will power the console LED strip through the exposed hole.
  • You should be able to route one end of the carry forward cable into the mirror housing and the other downward below the mirror housing.  It is a tight fit, so be patient and take your time.

5.

Tap into the OEM Power connector

  • I simply stripped and inserted the exposed wires for my power cables into the OEM’s Bulb connector poles.
  • Reconnect the OEM power connector
  • Suspend the turn signal lens and test your connections.

Note:  Below are the Positive and Ground cable colors for the OEM Power Connector:

Left Mirror  --->   Green cable is Positive (+)

Black / White cable is Ground (-)

Right Mirror --->  Black cable is Positive (+)

Black / White cable is Ground (-)

Make sure you pair up the (+) wire with the (+) from your LED strip and vice versa for the (-) wire.

Run a quick test, turn on the bike and if the LED doesn’t blink, reverse the wires.

Note:  If you are doing a simple inside the mirror LED strip installation, your are done.

Reinstall the turn signal lens and repeat the process for the other mirror.

5.

Bundle your wires

  • By now you should have three sets of wires inside the mirror housing:

  1. LED Strip Wires
  2. Carry forward cable wires
  3. Power source wires

  • Bundle together the (+) and (-) wires together

6.

Connect bundled wires together

  • I used a two pole terminal to secure my bundled wires (+) and (-) so they won’t come apart.  You can use a simple twist cap instead.

7.

Reinstall the Mirror Lens

  • Tuck away the wires behind the mirror lens and reinsall it.

8.

Repeat steps 1-8 for the other mirror.

9.

Install Console / Handlebar LED Strip

  • I added a third LED strip reminder to my handlebar where my voltmeters are.
  • Install the Third strip and route the cable for it to where the junction box is going to be installed

10.

Add Junction Box

I used a small box to connect the LEFT / Right and Top LED strip wires and connect them all together.

  • Drill three small holes, the size of your wires, on the side of the junction box.
  • Insert the wires from your LED strips through the drilled holes

11.

Bundle wires and connect them together

  • Bundle your wires (+) (-) together for all three LED strips.
  • I used a two pole connector to secure them together.

12.

Close Junction Box and secure it in place

  • Zip tie togethr the excess wire inside the junction box and close it
  • Apply a little bit of clear silicone to the cable holes to waterproof the box.
  • Position the junction box in your desired location and secure it in place

13.

Test your setup to make sure that everyting is working according to plan.

14.

Reinstall any removed tupperware and you are done.
