Dear Fülöp,

 

I was very happy to receive your two letters, from which I see that your holiday and your recuperation are progressing perfectly.[2] Naturally we cannot now badger you to come and see us here. The time for that will come, when your health is fully restored, and then we will make sure that you will be able to work here undisturbed, and not so much as to tire you. Your health is the main thing, dear Fülöp, and – thank God – you are on the path to recovery and to emerging stronger and fresher than ever.

 

I have carefully studied the three letters asking for your financial support and my conclusion is this: pay no attention to any of them.[3] They are just requests that have been routinely sent out, pumping people for money. This is particularly true of the one about the High School Soirée, which is no more than a filled-out form letter. The letter from the Children’s Fund is similar, asking you to pay to be a sponsor of their Garden Party. Both these events have now taken place and they have closed their books. The Ereklyés Országzászló[4] committee could at least have had their letter signed by their president, Nándor Urmánczy.

 

Ignore all of them, and instead, when you are completely restored to health and are in a position to make donations, I recommend Mrs Miklós Horthy’s[5] charity fund, which is something Her Serene Highness raises every year. Every penny it makes is passed on to the needy. It is possible to send donations directly to her.

 

In the next day or so I will send the inserts to go into the splendid new Hungarian edition of your book, ready for you to sign, together with a bound first copy of the book.[6]
