A GREAT ANTHROPOLOGIST

Portrait Presented to Dr. A. C. Haddon

On his retirement from the Readership in Ethnology, which he has held since 1909, Dr. Alfred Cort Haddon was on Saturday night, at a dinner in Christ’s College, Cambridge, presented with his portrait, painted by Mr. Philip de Laszlo [2458].

Professor Sir WILLIAM RIDGEWAY, who presided, said that Dr. Haddon ranked among the leading anthropologists of the day and possessed a world-wide reputation for his ability, zeal, and self-sacrifice. He had more than anyone created and maintained the flourislüng School of Anthropology at Cambridge.

Professor SELIGMAN, London university, spoke of Dr. Haddon’s excellent field work, and said it was his personal opinion that Dr. Haddon thought that it was his business to be up and about in time to help the sun get to work. (Laughter.) Of him the natives used to say: “He close up alongside God. He savvy too much.”
