Project 1999 Barb Shaman Soloing Guide
By Mgellan Snowstalker, Bregan D’Aerthe
This Guide is intended for players like myself that struggle to find the big blocks of time required to group productively and would like to solo a Shaman to max level. Since the only type of Shaman I’ve ever played is a Barbarian, currently this guide is limited to this race.
Levels 1-5 Everfrost - If your newbie zone is Everfrost you're luckier than most, this is one of the best newbie zones in the game. Kill bears, spiders, gnoll pups and gobbie whelps to 6. Collect skins and webs for tailoring. You can also gather Polar Bear Skins and turn them into Cindl in Halas for experience and newbie armor – she also collects Wrath Orc Wristbands for xp, coin, and armor. Shamans should do the Initiate Symbol of the Tribunal quest to get a 6/32 1HB summoned hammer that will provide a decent magic weapon (AC3 1WIS 3MANA) through your teens.
Levels 6-9 Blackburrow – Train central, make a button that says TRAIN TO ZONE! Hunt the guards outside the zone as a youngster and progress deeper into the dungeon as you go. Do collect Gnoll Fangs to turn into the lady warrior in the warrior guild (or Capt Tillen in Qeynos for the Moonstone quest) for lots of xp and some coin. After you can clear the top level take the long ramp down to the third level and camp the bridge, pulling to the ledge before the bridge, which is a relatively “safe spot” to heal, med, and camp (P99 seems to differ from Live in this respect as I have been attacked on the ledge occasionally.)
Levels 9-19 Everfrost – As soon as you get SOW you can start kiting mammoth calfs in EF, there's two static spawns on the Tundra in front of Bandl and two/three wanderers that are on 6 m timers IIRC. SOW, cast Tainted Breath to kick things off, run til you don't hear the footsteps, wait 3 secs, cast Sicken, rinse and repeat til dead. Root/rot once you’re high enough to stick root reliably since stationary DOT damage is higher than when the mob is moving per a recent patch.
Levels 19-32 Everfrost - Hunt mammoths (affectionately known as mommas) in Everfrost. Head out to the frozen tundra to the N ruins across the river from the entrance to Perma, there’s a wanderer near Megan’s tower, a static spawn across the river from there, and three spawns near Perma. Mammoth tusks are the main reason to be there, they sell for 9pp each to Starn Bearjumper in the ruins near Megan’s Tower. Cast Spirit Pouch for a container to put them in.
Levels 32-35 Splitpaw - The gnolls spires outside Splitpaw in South Karana is one of the nicest leveling spots in the game. Alas, many folks know this great spot and the gnoll spires are often overcamped. Try hunting here at off-peak hours. The exp. and coin are very very nice. You can sell at the vendor in the centaur village or the bird vendor at the top of KFC. Soon you can venture inside Splitpaw for great xp and loot.
Levels 35-40 Rathe Mountains - Cynthia at the Gypsy camp is a solo camp that is custom made for shaman 35-40+. Send your dog… immediately chain cast Winter's Roar til she is dead. She is a wizard and will nuke the crap out of you and sometimes cast Bonds of Force. Wait for her to respawn...6m 15s...and hit her again...try to get her before she buffs and DSs herself. If you keep yourself and your dogs buffs up, its cake. She drops runes, words, gems and up to 4 pp. The sweet part? No wandering mobs...the other Gypsies don't agro, and they are vendors...you can even buy food and water there! Note: On P99 Cynthia seems to occasionally spawn at a higher level than live, which caused me a couple of deaths at lvl 34 through her resisting everything I threw at her.
Level 40-50 Feerrot- lone spectre near the Plane of Hate entrance, spawns every 6 mins and provides about ½ a blue every spawn at 40. Root, slow, send in the dawg and dot. Another camp similar to Cynthia, quiet steady xp while you do other things! Once you get higher start pulling from within the cave outside the entrance to Fear, by 50 you’ll be able to clear the caves before the lone spec spawns outside again but everything will start to go light blue/green at 51. Also very good 40-45 are the guards inside Ogguk. Not the outside ones, they will EAT YOU.
Alt Level 45+ - City of Mist - Lots of great places to solo in CoM all the way to the third level near 60. Stables, Temple, Arena, Moat, and 2nd floor are all are appropriate for different levels.
Levels 50-55 Everfrost - solo ice giants by castle, experience drops off but lots of coin, fine steel and other items makes this a profitable camp. People stay here past 55 because of the wealth but xp gets slow… This spot is often camped during prime time so off hours is better to get there. Note these giants are now 100% resistant to cold spells so you’re stuck with epic/Ebolt/Plague to rot them down, no JBB makes me a sad panda :( Seafuries similar camp but heavily populated. You can start this camp earlier in high 40s by taking back giant only but by 55 you can keep all three giants in play at once with Paralyzing Earth and epic.
Level 56-60 Howling Stones - solo entrance mobs - Buff, invis, zone in past green scorps (which will gang up on you and kill you if not invis with recent green aggro changes) and hope like hell there are no see invis mobs circling the zone in point (or double invis). If not, park on the third step on the N side stairs (that stair is safe from both wanderers at entrance and golems at the doors so position precisely and don’t move - avoid the east stairs as they’re a pit trap with a nasty ass wanderer to boot.) and start with the two entrance mobs, which should be a combination of goos, bottomless devourers or a see invis Sepulchure Skelly that will harm touch you for 450 - keep it rooted! If you get aggro on zone in, if you can root them you’re good or hat out and try again. Then, from across the hall (leved so you can get high enough for LOS) start pulling the other stair golems, root one, root the other before it gets to you, root/rot, rinse and repeat. If you slow them then you can be careless with roots since they don’t hit all that hard. Watch for respawns of the entrance mobs every 20m. Once you have the N key (a tallow candle) you can proceed inside. Bring a charged Leatherfoot Raiders Skullcap with you to avoid looking for rezzes in an empty zone! Obviously things are much simplified if you zone in when there’s already someone there killing the entrance mobs, which is fairly often during prime time. However, this zone is terribly empty most of the time so expect to need to deal with mobs on zonein. You really need Paralyzing earth (56 root) and epic to do this camp efficiently.
Alt Level 56-60 City of Mist - on Second / Third levels you can solo to 60! The trick to get up to second level is double invis (make a ITU pot and get someone to invis you after you drink it) and head to the temple area, go through the doors up to the balcony level. On your right as you exit the door to the balcony is a wall hanging - un-leved, you can jump from the edge of the balcony to the wall and onto the second level. There’s lots of live/undead mobs there, hence the dbl-invis.
Alt Level 56-60 Karnor’s Castle - Even tho this zone is usually heavily populated if you can find a spot there’s lots of mobs that are generally wanderers and can be single pulled. You can stick to the outside corners to the left or right of the bridge to solo and pick up short duration groups here as well. Get a jarsath scale hat (+5 SvM) as part of your el cheapo resist gear. If you pull casters you need at least 150+ MR or they’ll eat you - bring Null pots! Head to basement at higher levels.
Alt Level 56-60 Sol B - Efreeti Djarn's Trash mobs (packs of 2 & 3), they hit hard and fast. but are great exp. There are 8 mobs (1 at front near lava + 2 wanderers, then pack of 3 at first crossroad, then pack of 2 to the left through the tunnel) readily available.
Once you are 60 and are looking for other challenges, check out the Solo Artist Challenge (click here) and give it a try! Feedback on other high level solo venues would be appreciated!
