Tips for Using Chromebooks, Laptops, and iPads in the Classroom
- Assign each student a specific device to check out every time. This will streamline the checkout process and make it easier to track down the source of equipment damage.
- Have students check out and in devices in groups. For example, numbers 1-10, then 11-20, 21-30, 31-40. This makes monitoring easier and reduces crowds at the cart.
- Have students use www.wuhsd.org/chscheckout/ to check out devices.
- Actively monitor the checkout and check-in process.
- Use Google Classroom. Students don’t need to save their work; it’s automatic! It is a great accountability tool because it essentially impossible for a student to lose his or her work.
- Post your written instructions on Google Classroom so absent students can make up the work.
- Circulate throughout the room.
- When giving instruction, have the students lower the screens on the laptops or close the screens completely.
- Be sure that you can see all computer screens as you circulate the classroom.
- Try the “Ask two people before the teacher” rule.
- When students help other students, have them show them, not do it for them.
- Begin the check-in procedure early. The beginning of embedded support works well. The quicker everything is put away correctly, the quicker the class gets released for embedded support.
- Be sure to have the students shut off the computers, not just log them off.
- Assign a student to check that all computers are plugged in using the correct charging cords.
- Personally check that all laptops are put away correctly.
