When to do this step:

After you have finished framing and sheathing your cave passage

Before you have textured or painted the interior or exterior of your cave passage

Required tools and supplies:

Step 1: Locate the clear plastic template that came with your formations. If you do not have your template, contact Dave at jacksondmit@cavesim.com

Step 2: Take a look at your cave passage and decide where you would like your formations, either now or in the future.  Place a mark on the outside of the cave passage wherever you want a formation, taking care to place the mark at least 4-6” from the walls.

Keep in mind:

Step 3: At each location where you want a formation, use your template and sharp pencil to mark the holes indicated on the template.  Keep in mind:

Step 4 (optional): Use your center punch and hammer to make indentations where the pencil marks are.  This will help you to drill the holes in the correct places.

Step 5: Drill the eight holes that you have marked in step 3.  Be sure to use the correct size drill bit for each hole.  As you get close to drilling through, reduce the force on your drill and let it do the work to avoid damaging the inside surface of your plywood.  Optional: Drill small pilot holes all the way through the plywood, and then enlarge them from both the inside and outside of the passage using the correct size bits.  This will help to prevent damaging the plywood surface.  This step is more important if you have dull bits.

Step 6: Using a sensor base, check your holes by placing the sensor base on the holes.  There is only one correct way to place the sensor base (use the buzzer and buzzer hole to align the sensor base and the wood).  The LEDs in the sensor base should go down into the four LED holes.  From inside the passage, look up into the buzzer hole -- you should see the buzzer.  The large central hole should line up with the central hole in the sensor base.  If any of the holes are not in the correct place, drill a new hole and patch the old hole.  When you are done with this step, remove the sensor base and set it aside.

Step 7: From inside the passage, hammer in two tee nuts into the correct holes.  You can refer to your template to determine which holes to drive the tee nuts into.

Step 8: As shown below, place small pieces (¼” x ¼”) over holes in the back of the tee nuts.  This will prevent your texture and paint from filling the tee nuts.

Step 9: When preceding steps have been done for all of your desired formation locations, and you have textured and painted your passage, you may proceed to Installation of Sensor-compatible stalactites and stalagmites.
