Mel is an Army helicopter mechanic who was stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the 2010s. She was sexually assaulted by her commanding officer, which was followed by judicial procedures and therapy. She eventually was discharged from the Army and got into politics, eventually getting elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018.
