Dear and most respected Maestro,

It is with reluctance that I trouble you with this letter, but please forgive me, because I have something important to tell you. – The directors of the Műcsarnok have asked me for the portrait [9966] and I have refused

on the grounds that it has only been hanging in my house for 14 days, since the frame sustained some slight damage and had to be repaired, and after that it was photographed, so we have scarcely had an opportunity to admire your masterpiece, which gives us such pleasure. On the other hand

I would be happy to lend it to the Spring Exhibition, when we will be travelling a lot in any case.^[2] For the moment, however, I am completely open and I would just like to know from you, dear Maestro, whether you have anything against my decision; would you prefer, for whatever reason, that we should exhibit the portrait now, or does it not make any difference to you? Let me make it clear that you are to answer completely honestly: I will act in accordance with your reply. –

With your kind permission, I enclose the photograph of the portrait that was made here. –

I hope your cure in Bad Kissingen was a success and that you are continuing your laurel-crowned work with renewed vigour. Regards to your charming dear wife. I remain, your sincere, true admirer,

Mélyen tisztelt kedves Mester,

nagyon nehezen szánom el magamat, Önt levelemmel zaklatni, de bocsásson meg, most sürgős közlendőm van. – A műcsarnok igazgatósága kéri tőlem a képet, és én ezt megtagadtam

azon indokolással, hogy csak 14 napja függ nálam mert a keret kissé meg sérült és helyre kellett hozatni, azon kívül fotografálva lett, és így mi magunk még alig jutottunk hozzá, hogy gyönyörködjünk az Ön remekében, mely nekünk annyi örömet szerez. Ellenben a

tavaszi kiállításra, mikor mi úgyis sokat utazunk, szívesen adom. Eddig én azonban még mindig szabad vagyok, és most Öntől akarom tudni, kedves Mester, van e Önnek válaszom ellen bármi kifogása, óhajtja e Ön bármi okból, hogy most állítsuk e ki, vagy Önnek mindegy? Előre kijelentem, teljesen sans gêne rendelkezzék és én ahhoz fogom magam tartani amit Ön válaszol. –

Szíves engedelmével küldöm a kép itteni fotográfiáját. –
