5.

* This should demonstrate: • how much of a timesaver,

• how unnecessary it is to explain, and

• how effectively it can convey a message IF that reference/allusion is in our collective consciousness...which you’re doing with this.

EXAMPLE

You are assigned the following literary reference: The Ugly Duckling.

+++

The Story:

This story was written by Hans Christian Anderson.

A nest of ducklings hatched. As they grew, one was especially large, awkward, gangly, and well...ugly. The other ducklings would mock and tease him. Even the adult ducks would insult him and call him names behind his back. The ugly duckling was self-conscious and sad. But as time passed, the ugly duckling grew. As he grew, he became more and more beautiful. One day, he looked at his reflection in the water. It turned out that the ugly “duckling” was actually a swan – the Swan egg accidentally got mixed up with the duck eggs. The cygnet (baby swan) had looked different from the others at a young age, but as he aged, he became much more elegant and beautiful than the ducks.

The Analysis when used as an Allusion:

An “ugly duckling” describes a person is made fun of and criticized for his or her appearance.

That person then evolves into something much more beautiful than anyone had expected, and even more

beautiful than those people who had made fun of him or her.

Example:

The Princess Diaries

A nerdy, thick-glassed, uncoordinated girl is actually a princess. With a makeover and some etiquette lessons, she becomes a sophisticated, gorgeous young lady.
