RUN and RACE REPORTS:

Clare Durand - US Orienteering Championships. High Desert Runners member, Clare Durand competes in Orienteering races. Her results posted here show her traveling all over the country to compete. Her latest event was the US Orienteering Championships in the Boise, Idaho area in late June. They have “sprint” distance races and “long” distance races. As you can see in the picture below, she cleaned up! She won 2 Gold medals and a Bronze in her age class plus an additional Gold medal for best overall results in her age class for the weekend! Congratulations Clare!

HIGH DESERT RUNNERS TUESDAY PRACTICE: We don’t usually include a “report” on our weekly practice, but in the interest of drumming up interest, here goes.... On Tuesday July 11, we had 15 runners show up for our practice at Joe Walker. These practices can take a variety of formats. Most often they are some sort of time based interval workout. This is where we run for specified time and then have a specified time of recovery until the next repeat. For example, we could do a 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1 workout - runs of 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 4 minutes, etc with recoveries of 2 minutes after the 1s and the 2s and 3 minutes after the 3s and the 4s. Runners focused on getting faster run these intervals fast. Runners, perhaps new to the sport, focused on gaining endurance simply run them comfortably. Either way, we all regroup during the recovery time and this keeps it social and fun.

Sometimes, our coach, Dale Lister,  throws us a curve - adding drills or exercises.  This week we did one of our favorites - the Sweet 16 workout. It consists of 16 form drills interspersed with short strides (sprints). Jim Haskett was on hand with his camera....

HIGH DESERT RUNNERS SUMMER XC SERIES: The first three summer series races have been held and the results are “in the books”, or more accurately, they are posted online. Check the High Desert Runners website at www.highdesertrunners.org to see the results each week. Here are links to the first three weeks.:
