Run and Race Reports:

Mountain Trail Fun Run - March 8, 2019-

It was a cold windy March morning this year for the March Mountain Trail Fun Run.  In March you expect to see people wearing green, but  instead of runners decked out in St. Patty’s day attire, the trail and mountains were draped in a fresh Spring green.  We even had some wet water crossings including the return of the stream at Lake Hughes Road.  Fourteen brave, happy souls came out to enjoy brief moments of sunshine between the clouds, and lots of miles of the Pacific Coast Trail.  Some runners ventured all the way to Lake Hughes and back, and still some others went for even more miles on the east side of San Francisquito Canyon Road.  All were happy to return to the warmth of their cars after partaking in some recovery food.  Come out and join us in April for another spectacular run!

Poppy Trot 2019: brilliant blossoms, wicked wind

Literally billions of poppies and other wildflowers blanketed the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve west of Lancaster April 6 as a few HDRs and friends came out to enjoy the visual feast during the annual Poppy Trot fun run/walk on the reserve’s trails. \

State parks staffers as well as long-time Poppy Trot veterans agreed that this year’s blanket of

blossoms that carpeted the preserve’s hills was undoubtedly the most dense and extensive since the reserve was established in the 1970s, thanks to more-than-usual rainfall received in January and February that aided germination of poppy seeds.

However, the strong southwesterly winds that raked the reserve the morning of the Poppy Trot kept most of the poppy blooms closed, and made the experience miserable for multiplied thousands of

visitors who thronged the park.

In anticipation of the high volume of visitors who would come to see the brilliant displays this spring, state parks management had a new, wide trail built adjoining the entrance road to make walking the half-mile from Lancaster Road to the central area safer for those who had to park on Lancaster Road after the main and auxiliary parking lots filled up.

Poppy Trot participants had their choice of up to seven miles of trails heading out from the parking lot and visitor center over the Antelope Butte trails to the northeast and the Poppy Trail loop to the west. The only limitation was a requirement that they be back at the reserve’s picnic area for munchies and a drawing for a $25 gift certificate at the visitor center’s gift shop by 9 a.m. This year’s gift certificate winner was Vicki Galli, who had the winning number of 13, the highest number on a selection of numbered cards drawn from a can by those who had returned to the picnic area by finishing time.

Among the dozen HDRs and friends who participated in this year’s Poppy Trot were (from left) Jim Haskett, host Alan Brown,
Elena Villegas, Rob Perez, David Sell, June Willey, Greg Galli, Vicki Galli and Justin Koo.

Only a dozen HDRs and friends participated in this year’s Poppy Trot, one of the smallest

turnouts ever for the traditional HDR event that dates back more than 35 years. Participants included Jim

Haskett, David Sell, Greg and Vicki Galli, June and Alan Willey, Justin Koo, Jerry and Judy Sadl, Rob

Perez and Poppy Trot host Alan Brown. In addition, Elena Villegas from the Loma Linda Lopers

running club drove all the way from Redlands to join the local harriers on the trails.        ---Alan Brown
