SUMMER TIME!

You might think that summer in the Antelope Valley would be not so great for running... after all it is HOT! But actually, it is great. The nights here in the high desert always cool off nicely, so running in the morning always works, and running in the evening works our okay as well. Hence, we have our annual High Desert Runners Summer Cross Country Race Series. This weekly race series has been going on for DECADES. The last couple of these decades have been under the directorship of Alan Brown.

It is great to see everyone out there each week. There are children just beginning their running ‘careers’ doing the 1 mile race. There are tweens, middle school and youth club runners out there getting used to the 3. High school runners come out in force. College students home for their summer break often show up and get in on the fun as well. And of course adults way up into their senior years are out there giving the youngsters reason to go fast - what teenager want to get passed by a grandpa or grandma?  Side note, THIS grandpa sometimes reminds his Hillview runners of such when he passes them out on the course: “C’mon, you just got passed by a grandpa!!”  As the coach of Hillview Middle School Cross Country and Track for just about 20 years, though I relish this opportunity to see the teen agers and young adults who were once under my care.

Summer also included the annual 4th of July races. We had a great turnout in Santa Clarita this year.

Summer is of course vacation time as well. We have runners traveling all over the place, jumping into races while they are away.

And don’t forget the trails! We have our monthly trail races all year long. We start earlier - 7 am to beat the heat in the summer. But when you get up in the mountains, up in elevation, you get a little extra cooling and hopefully shade as well... See you tomorrow for the July event - details below.

One of our summer traditions has had to change. For 7 years we have hosted the Antelope Valley Fair Wave Race, one year on the fairgrounds and the rest on the blvd prior to the AV Fair. This year we have been unable to secure either location, so we are moving the event to Apollo park... but as long as we are moving away from the Fair, we are changing the date to October - when the running weather is typically even better!

RUN/RACE REPORTS!!

We are 4 weeks into our summer cross country race series. Each week we have had between 100 and 150 runners, between the two races, in attendance. Collegiate runner Joseph Biehl (Desert Christian Alumni) has won the first 3 races. Nico Colin has stood out as well, placing in the top 3 at each event. The ladies have had a different 1st place finisher each week, but Paraclete runner Angela Adelantar has been in the top 3 each time.

These races are a big opportunity for HDR runners to rack up serious Gran Prix Race Series Points. The Summer XC Series is part of the Gran Prix series and thus the point values are high. The race series consists of 5 practice events, a coed relay and an event final.

HDR members score 5-15 placing points for their best finish among the first 5 races. This means that a first place male or female finisher would get 15 points! 2nd gets 14, 3rd gets 13 and so on until 10th place. The minimum placing point score would be a 5. Those who place in the top 5 of their age group can score 6 - 10 points. These placing points, accrue only for the runners ‘best’ finish of the first 6 races. For example, I have competed in 3 races so far, placing 2nd in my age group twice and 1st place once. I have earned 10 points for placing first in my age group.

In addition to the placing points from the runners’ best finish, runners score a bonus point for each other summer series race competed in or volunteered at.

The full results of the race series are available here...

On August 9, week 7, we will have the Summer Cross Country Series Finale. Those runners who have competed or volunteered at at least 3 of the 6 previous events are eligible for awards. Others, may of course come out and compete, but they cannot win awards. Medals will be given in various age groups at this race only. HDR Club who are eligible to win awards are also going to earn 5-15 placing points for their participation in this race. Volunteers at the finale and club member participants who have not completed 3 previous events will earn 5 participation points at the finale   (Pics can be found/purchased here...)

The last Saturday each month we have had club members and friends out at Apollo for a fun run/training run. This is a run that is completely up to you. The park has a nice 1 mile paved partially shaded path around the lake. Temperatures seem to be cooler there than elsewhere in the valley. The scenery is nice.... Come out and go as far and as fast  as you want to! Be sure to say hi to the others. Look for a sign in sheet on the host’s car to get a Gran Prix Point!

At least 15 High Desert Runners made the drive down to Santa Clarita on the 4th of July for their Independence Day 10K and 5k. They offer the two races consecutively so that some of the crazier among us can do both. At 7 a.m. the 10k started. It was a simple out and back on the river paseo near the park.

Grant, Dale and Cindy finished their 10K took a short break and then lined up for the 8 a.m. 5k. Well, it would seem that Cindy would not have had much of a break, finishing the 10K with just a few minutes to spare before the start of the 5k. The 5k starts at the park and heads to the route of the Santa Clarita Independence Day parade. It does an out and back on the parade route. This is awesome as the parade attracts thousands of spectators for the race -- or perhaps it is the race attracting the spectators for the parade !? Either way runners in the 5k get the fun of having lots of people out there cheering you on.

RACE/RUN SUBMISSIONS: :
The HDR Express got skipped in June, so the list of race submissions is a bit lengthy!  Congrats, as always to all of you getting out there.

It is much easier for the Gran Prix Points contest guy to keep up with race submissions when they are done on a timely basis. It is also much easier for the HDR Express editor (same guy) to REPORT on races when all the races to report on in a given time period are received within a couple weeks of the that time period.  Therefore ALL RACES MUST BE SUBMITTED WITHIN TWO WEEKS....  When you run a race... report a race!  It is simple - click here... or email me d.lister@gmail.com - if you prefer..
