WSU Fall Break (Friday, October 17, 2014)

October 16, 2014

Geoscience Faculty Travel to Vancouver:  Professors Adolph Yonkee and Marek Matyjasik will represent the Department of Geosciences at the 2014 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia (October 19-22). Dr. Yonkee will report on his ongoing research into the detailed dynamics of mountain building. He is the lead author on one presentation and a co-author on two others. Dr Matyjasik will report on his and Dr. Hernandez' recent collaborative research with the USDA Forest Service on the impact forest fires have on water quality. WSU Geoscience majors/alumni Chelsey Combe, Tabitha Hathcock, Stephanie Mitts, Jennifer Mobbs, and Andrew Park are also co-authors on the presentation. Below are links to all the WSU abstracts:

SGE is Recruiting and Wants You: Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE) is the national honor society for geoscience students. Information about the national organization can be found here. WSU's chapter is completing its fall membership drive and interested students should contact Michael Hess (Chapter President) or Dr. Rick Ford (Faculty Advisor) before Friday, October 31. In order to join SGE, students need a 2.67 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in their geoscience courses, with a minimum of 10 credit hours. It's more than a line on your resume. The group has already completed a fun service project in conjunction with the UGS's celebration of national Earth Science Week and has plans for other exciting projects and activities. Consider joining us.

Is Your Picture on the Majors' Board?  We are working to update the Geosciences Majors' Board that is located in the hallway just outside SL 320.  If your picture is not on the board, or you would like an updated picture, we invite you to stop by the department office and get your picture taken.

No Classes Tomorrow:  Tomorrow, Friday, October 17th, is Fall Break.  Enjoy your 3-day-weekend!

Good News for Future Geoscientists: The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) has released a report (attached) that estimates the U.S. workforce will experience a shortage of 135,000 geoscientists by the year 2022. All indicators suggest this is a great time to be a geoscience major.

Call For Resumes:  North American Mine Services, in Kaysville, is a local small business that provides contractors for mining companies, mine permitting services, and mapping. They have been in business for over 30 years and have employed professionals with a variety of environmental, geological, and technical skills. NAMS is now asking for resumes from graduates and soon-to-be-graduates in expectation of future work in environmental, mining, and exploration fields. If you are interested please send your resume to North American Mine Services, Human Resources at nae@nae-xploration.com, or 447 North 300 West, Suite 3, Kaysville, Utah 84037.  If you have any questions, please call 801-544-3421.

Send Us Your Pictures:  We would love to feature your photo as a future Photo of the Week.  Any pictures you have of outdoor activities, field trips, research projects, vacations in national parks would be great, especially if you and/or other majors are in the shots.  Thanks for sharing!

Website of the Week:  GeoCorps,  https://rock.geosociety.org/g_corps/  (recommended by Dr. Rick Ford)

Another pic from Doc Eaton's Geology of Utah field trip: AEG major Matt Collins admires a pillow structure in a 350,000-year-old lava flow exposed in the Hurricane fault zone. The pillow lava provides evidence that this flow was erupted into, and once blocked, the ancestral Virgin River. (Photo credit: Rick Ford).

Have a great 3-day weekend!
