Summary: The range of literature is more than one might think. The writings of Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson may be more familiar. This time period also includes poetry by Phyllis Wheatley, letters by Abigail Adams and published writing by the Cherokee, Elias Boudinot. The variety of written word all express the momentum and challenges facing the emerging Voice of America.

11.4.1.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain

You will need:        

Complete this activity 2.1 by following the steps:

STEP 1: 

Read the following excerpted texts/selections from this time period.

A.Patrick Henry- “Give me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech

B.Thomas Paine- quotes from Common Sense, 1776

C.Ben Franklin- Selections from Poor Richard’s Almanac with a brief sketch of his life

D.Thomas Jefferson- The Declaration of Independence

E.Phyllis Wheatley “An Hymn to the Evening” poem

F. Abigail Adams- "Remember the Ladies" Letter

G. Elias Boudinot An Address to the Whites

Pay particular attention to the Text Summary Sheet and Text Essential Question Sheet :        

A. Make a copy of the Text Summary Sheet Google doc and complete for each text/section of text.

Copy and paste a new summary section for each text ( 7 total summaries)

B. Complete a Text Essential Question Sheet for this activity
