I got your long – letter with the enclosures – everything you say makes me sad – I know you are right – Szerén^[1] will never change – she is a hard, mean woman – her husband is a scoundrel^[2] – Szerén has not answered my letter of a month ago – and I have just received a [illegible] letter from Gyula, it’s poor show for them to be hanging on to both of my paintings – but after this – I won’t send them anything – what a fortune I have spent on those two – on Gyula’s child’s education, on building the house – etc – I’m tired of it – and I have no desire to see the family – because they only have one idea – to blackmail me – I would prefer it if you –

were to come here for a week, towards the end of August – or in September – and then we could set off back together – I would go straight to Venice – and you to Pest – If I go to Pest it will only be for a couple of days – quietly – but I am not keen on the idea of going – But we can decide this later, think it over – you could go to Munich on your way here, the situation is very serious in germany – and it will only get worse – and as I have said before, I would like it if your son was nearer to you.^[3] The letters you exchanged with Gyula, which you sent me copies of – leave me at a loss for words – how does one reply – frightful people – I don’t think Elza^[4] and her husband are any better – encountering this sort of attitude, even though they are relations – at least from my side – or my family’s is very hard – But I hope you have been able to arrange things is such a way that

I had a very nice letter from Bárczy telling me that he is coming for a few days – either here or to Venice – he is a thoroughly decent – friend – it is with great sorrow that I have to tell you – that poor Henry’s little daughter died – this is now the fourth – child – the first 4 months – then 5 – and 6 – and now – a completely healthy, well developed little baby – only 7 months old – it was a difficult birth and that had really taken its toll – If they wait now for 2 years – they have every chance of having a completely healthy baby^[6]

poor things they are very down. Vio’s mother arrives today – and in two weeks she goes to Switzerland to recuperate with her parents. Henry might go with her for a bit – Henry’s situation is very uncertain at the moment and he hopes to be taken on to teach at Cambridge – He has done a lot of foolish and ill-considered things in his life, which it does not really do to talk about, I have so many obligations – as far as Stephen and Patrick’s^[7] factory is concerned, we will have news in the autumn – but I have great hopes that their efforts will be crowned with complete success they are hard-working, energetic boys. Lucy^[8] came down to the country a few days ago with Johny^[9] to that nice little place that we rented until October last year – Paul and his wife were here yesterday^[10] – and in a week they are going to the Rhine region in Switzerland in their own motor car his [illegible] is progressing slowly but surely – it’s easier for him with a rich wife – Diana and little

Philip are coming here in a week^[11] – and staying for a month – Stephen will soon be in full swing at the factory and will only be able to come to us on Sundays. Tomorrow morning Lucy and I are going up to town because Lord Cromer, Lord Chamberlain of the royal household,^[12] has invited us to luncheon – and on Thursday afternoon we are invited to the Royal Garden party – I hope we will be fortunate enough to be spoken to by the king.^[13] After that Lucy comes back down here – and will stay here quietly whereas in August I will have to spend 10–12 days in my studio – I have to finish two portraits of eminent leading academics, one for London university [6896]^[14] – and the other

for the university of Belfast (Ireland) [6067]^[15] – the official unveiling of both will be in September – an important event for me – so I will be here for that – and in the first half of Sept. – then around the 20th to Venice and Florence for two weeks – Write and let me know what you think of my idea – of you coming here – which means that we wouldn’t go to Pest – the political situation is bad at present – everything is up in the air – by the way did you read that the english king has given permission for me to receive my highest honour – from the King of Belgium – and to wear it on my chest – a beautiful gold cross^[16] – Pest must be very hot at the moment – where do you spend your evenings? whom do you see? Dear Marczi, dear brother-in-law,

Since becoming a “Grandma” I have had no word of congratulation from you on my new status!! Mother + baby are blooming and we old folk are happy to witness the beginning of a new generation. He looks like Stefy, big nose, big eyes – We have been down in the country since Friday. Far away from the maelstrom in London at last, which seems to get more and more hectic. Fülöp badly needs to rest, + so do I – His nerves are at breaking point, as are mine, + you know that this state of affairs always brings on agitation + unpleasant-

What are your plans for the summer? We are very sorry that you are not coming to us. Might you be able to come in the autumn? You really must try to arrange it. Forgive me for only now expressing my grateful thanks for the lovely kugler^[17] + paprika – It is so sweet of you to remember. Henry enjoyed his visit to B.pest very much and the chance to see you all. You made a lot of time for him which was very kind of you. szegények nagyon szomoruak. Vio anyja ma érkezik – s két hét múlva egy hónapra szüleinél lesz a Svájcba pihenni. Lehet Henry is vele lesz egy ideig – Henry helyzete most nagyon bizonytalan s reméli hogy Cambridgeben lesz mint tanár elhelyezve – Ő is sok – sok ügyetlenséget ostobaságot követett el, életében miről nem igen beszélhetik, sok a kötelezetségem – mindez Stephen és Patrick gyarára vonatkozólag az ősszel fog eldőlni – de sok a remény hogy teljes siker fogja koronázni mintkettő szorgalmas energicus emberek. néhány nap ota Lucy Johnyval el van falun ugyan az a szép kis hely melyet tavaly béreltünk octoberig – Paul itt volt nejével tegnap – s egy hét múlva sajat autojukon a Svájci Rajna vidéken fognak tartózkodni az ő [illegible] lassan – de jól fejlődik – neki könnyebb gazdag neje van – Diana a kis

Seit ich “Gross Mama” bin hatte ich von Dir kein Zeichen Gratulation zu meine neue Würde!! Mutter + Kind sehen blühend aus, und wir Alten freuen uns mit dem Anfang einen neuen Generation. Er sieth Stefy ähnlich, grosse Nase, grosse Augen –– Seit Freitag sind wir am Lande. Endlich fern v. dem Strudel in London, was immer intensiver wird. Fülöp bedarf sehr die Ruhe, + ich auch – Seine Nerven wie die meinen sind gespannt, + Du weisst diesen Zustand bringt Aufregungen + Unannehm

lichkeiten – Kurz, ich bin froh fort v. London zu sein – Johnny ist hier + spielt fest Tennis, + im August kommt Diana mit Baby – –

Was machst Du in Sommer? Sehr Leid ist uns, dass Du nicht zu uns kommst. Vielleicht kannst Du im Herbst kommen?
