Hotel Continental,
PARIS .
17th May, 1930.
Dear Mrs. Tweedie,
Your interesting letter of the 15th has reached me here and I hasten to reply to it.[1]
I full [sic] realise your great responsibilities in connection with the Pageant[2] and am glad to know that you have already so many influential men who have guaranteed money for its expenses. I regret to inform you, however, that I am unable to engage myself in this matter, that is, regarding the financial side of it. There are so many millionaires who I am sure will be pleased to assist you and who are in a position to do so. I myself have heavy responsibilities of which I do not speak, and there is such a great need among my colleagues to which I always like to attend. Moreover, since I have had the privilege of being elected President of the Royal Society of British Artists I shall have further claims upon me. However, there is no need for me to go into detail, as I am sure you will understand, but if I can be of assistance to you in any other way I shall be very pleased, as this wonderful idea of yours should be a great success.
I have to return home for the 22nd to receive the guests at the Soiree which is being given by the R.B.A. and I hope to have the pleasure of greeting you there. Next day I return to Paris where I shallbe [sic] until the end of this month.
Believe me,
Yours sincerely,
