Dear Friend,

I only interrupted my journey from Paris to Wiesbaden in Strasbourg. German is spoken there throughout and you feel as if you were in a German city. As soon as I had arrived here I tried to get in touch with Preetorius – see the attached card – who seems to be seriously ill.^[2] I went to Mainz but could not see him, and his niece told me he had suffered a heart attack which made it impossible for him to receive anybody.

I hope he got my message that you are sending your regards. Mainz is the biggest French garrison town I have ever seen. The inhabitants are less than enamoured with the behaviour of certain coloured colonial troops whose moral conduct is by no means exemplary.

Please don’t forget to send me photos of your portraits of Mussolini [6383], Tittoni [7347], the Pope [6690] and the Queens of Roumania [3200] and Greece [3273] to Vienna where I will soon return to, urgently and as soon as possible,

Mrs. De Laszlo^[3] should be with you by now. Please send her my warmest regards.

Thank you again for all your kind attention which did so much to make my stay [in Paris] most pleasant and interesting. You were there for me as a devoted helper and guide through all the magnificence of this wonderful city.

And I was so pleased

to see by how much friendship and admiration you are surrounded by there. It gives me satisfaction to have had a glimpse of your Parisian atmosphere now as well.

I am staying in Wiesbaden with old friends here in their villa. The season is rather dead at the moment and life for foreign visitors is cheap. I was invited yesterday together with Count Merenberg,^[4] the brother of Countess Torby (Archduchess Michael)^[5] and the uncle of Lady Wernher and the Marchioness of Milford-Haven. Many sad stories were told about Russian misery. Hoping to receive news from you very soon in Vienna I remain with my regards to you and Mrs. De Laszlo

Lieber Freund,

meine Reise von Paris nach Wiesbaden hatte ich nur in Strasbourg unterbrochen. Dort hört man überall deutsch sprechen u. glaubt sich darum noch immer in einer deutschen Stadt. Kaum hier angekommen, meldete ich mich, wie Sie aus beiliegender Karte ersehen, sofort bei Preetorius, der aber schwer krank zu sein scheint. Ich fuhr nach Mainz, konnte ihn nicht sehen, erfuhr aber von seiner Nichte, dass er eine schwere Herz-Attaque gehabt, die es ihm unmöglich mache jemand zu empfangen.

Allenfalls ist er durch mich unterrichtet worden von Ihren freundschaftlichen Gesinnungen für ihn. Mainz ist die größte französische Garnisonstadt, die ich je gesehen. Die dortige Bevölkerung ist keineswegs entzückt von dem Verhalten insbesondere gewisser farbiger Colonialtruppen, deren moralisches Betragen keineswegs einwandfrei ist.

Ich bitte Sie dringend nicht zu vergessen mir sobald wie möglich nach Wien, wohin ich demnächst reise, Photos Ihrer Porträts von Mussolini, Tittoni, dem Papast, der Königinnen von Rumänien u. Griechenland etc. einzusenden,

Jetzt dürfte schon Mrs Laszlo bei Ihnen sein. Ich grüße sie herzlichst.

Vielen Dank noch für alle mir in Paris erwiesenen Aufmerksamkeiten, die so sehr beigetragen haben mir den Aufenthalt angenehm u. interessant zu gestalten.

Sie waren mir dort ein getreuer Helfer u. Führer durch die Herrlichkeiten dieser wundervollen Stadt.

Und wie sehr habe ich mich gefreut,

Wahrzunehmen, von wie viel Freundschaft u. Bewunderung Sie dort umgeben sind. Dass ich nun auch Ihre Pariser Atmosphäre kennen gelernt, gereicht mir zur Genugtuung.

Hier in Wiesbaden bin ich zu Gaste bei alten Freunden in deren Villa. Es ist hier eher tote Saison u. das Leben namentlich für Fremde billig. Gestern war ich eingeladen zusammen mit dem Grafen Merenberg, Bruder der Gräfin Torby (Großfürstin Michael) u. Onkel der Lady Wernher u. der Marchioness of Milford-Haven. Da hörte ich viel trauriges über das russische Elend. In der Erwartung baldiger Mitteilung nach Wien bin ich Ihr u. der Mrs Laszlo freundschaftlich ergeb.
