‘Portrait as Present’, Daily Mirror, February 1929

While Lord and Lady Athlone were on leave in England and Scotland last autumn, a silver wedding fund was initiated in the Union, and the idea was taken up with enthusiasm.

As Mr. Hofmeyr, the Administrator of the Transvaal, declared at the time, the Earl and Countess have a very large place in our affections, and General Hertzog, the Prime Minister, warmly supported the commemoration.

A portrait of Princess Alice by Philip de Laszlo [2447] is among the other silver wedding gifts of this united couple.
