DONOR NAME(S): JANICE, LOUIS, GILBERT AND BRIAN CONLEY
This tile is a tribute to our parents who were born and raised in Lawrenceville in the 1920s.
Our father was of Irish Catholic descent and the son of a Pittsburgh city fire chief. Our mother was Polish Catholic and the daughter of a tavern owner on Butler Street. Our mother was very proud to be the only college graduate of her four siblings, graduating from both St. Francis School of Nursing and Duquesne University in the 1940s, a time when not many women attended college. Our father served in World War II and, after returning from the war, went to college on the G.I. Bill where he attained B.A. and Masters Degrees in Business at Duquesne University. In 1954, he became a Docket Administrator at the U.S. Federal Court in Pittsburgh and later was promoted to Deputy Clerk of Courts. After a successful career of 31 years, he retired as the Chief Clerk of Courts, a position which he was the first person to be appointed without a law degree.
Our family was raised in Lawrenceville where we grew up on 46th Street and were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Irish parish of the community. Our parents instilled many values in us throughout our childhood in the 50’s and 60’s. We were taught the value of education, the value of saving money for a rainy day, the value of not living beyond our means, the value of fairness and honesty, and the value of working hard to attain success. As a result, the four children have good jobs, good educations, lovely homes, and beautiful families.
In this tile, the Conley children express their love and appreciation to Gil and Loretta for their guidance, love, hard work, and caring throughout the years.
Thank you from all of us.
