Our learning focus for the term:

This term our Inquiry work is centred around Learning Focused Relationships and PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning). The students will be learning about how to get the most out of their learning - being confident enough to take risks, ask questions and keep trying even when it’s difficult.  They will learn about our new set of values, the 3 R’s - Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.

As part of our PE programme for the term, we will be focusing on summer sports with Youthtown  and participating in a Football Skills Clinic and a Softball Skills coaching clinic which each class will participate in once a week for 4 weeks..

e-Portfolios are an important part of your child’s learning journey.  These are works in progress by the students and the teachers. Your child’s log-in and password remain the same as last year.  In the next week your child will be beginning to contribute new work.  Please take time to share and discuss this with your child.

For your convenience, we can arrange for you to be emailed each time new work is uploaded.  If you would like this set up, please contact either the office or your class teacher.  We also encourage you to leave comments on the work that you view.  The students love to receive your feedback.  Student e-Portfolios can be accessed on the Class Pages via the school website.

We recommend bookmarking this link for easy future access!

Useful information

Uniforms:

We ask for your support to help our students show pride in their Elm Park School uniform.  Please ensure that your child is in the correct school uniform and that all items of clothing are clearly named. All school shoes need to be plain BLACK.  Please do not buy shoes with coloured soles and laces.  Girls should wear their hair tied back with a black, blue or white hair tie.

Please note that hats are compulsory in Term 1.

BYOD

A reminder that as part of the BYOD programme,  students in Years 3 - 6 have the option to bring

their own devices to school. This facility is available to support their learning.  The device is restricted to Chromebooks only.   More information can be found on this slideshow and in this booklet.  Please contact Ms Johnston for any clarifications with regards to the BYOD programme (belinda@elmpark.school.nz).

Homework:

In Year 4, we have reduced homework to the basics, as we understand that families have commitments outside of school time.  The primary focus for homework is setting a strong foundation of basic skills. The expectations are as follows:

  • At least 20 minutes reading per day
  • Mathletics - aim to achieve a bronze certificate (should take approximately 30 minutes over the week)
  • Basic Facts - focus on quick recall for all addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts
  • Spelling City to practise their spelling words

These skills form the foundation of success in the senior school. Please support your child by ensuring that they are meeting these minimum expectations.  If access to computers is a concern, students may use computers before school in their classrooms - please ask their teachers.

Food policy:

Students are not allowed to share any food or drink with others. Fizzy drinks, lollies/ chocolates are not allowed in school. Elm Park School  is a litter-free school. All lunch box rubbish will be sent home. Lunches can be ordered from the lunch room, either online or at the beginning of the day.

Parent Information Evening

We invite all parents to attend an evening to meet their child’s teacher.  Please meet in the Auditorium on Thursday 16 February at 6.30pm.  At this meeting we will discuss expectations for homework, behaviour, uniform, and will outline learning for the year.  This is also a great time to find out more about our BYOD programme.

Library:

Your child will visit the school library every week. Please ensure that the borrowed book is returned promptly, before the next visit to the library. We trust that the library books that are taken home will be looked after.

Activity Payment

The activity is $100 per year which you can pay in total or talk to the office about a payment plan.  This amount covers costs of trips and/or groups visiting our school.

We have a trip to Te Tuhi in Term 1 and it is important that the activity fee is paid promptly to enable your child to be able to take part in this visit.

EPS 5oth Jubilee

This year is very special as Elm Park School will celebrate its 50th  jubilee. The main celebration will be held on Saturday 28 October with many other activities planned throughout the year.  Visit our Facebook Page to find out more information: https://www.facebook.com/ElmParkSchool50th/
