NEED TO KNOW
ARMY SELECTION
Each player’s army should be Battleforged, cost no more than 2000 points, and should be made up of no more than 3 detachments. Your army may be composed from any 8th edition source published prior to September 1st 2019. In the case of rules published in White Dwarf, the date the magazine goes on sale in stores shall be used as the publication date. Where units are duplicated across multiple sources - for example in a codex and an index - the Games Workshop flowchart found in the designers commentary should be referred to.
BETA RULES
As 8th edition has grown a number of new rules have been released, tiraled, confirmed, altered and deleted. This has sometimes made it confusing for players to know which rules set is in use. This pack attempts to be conclusive about this issue, but will inevitably fall short as new rules are released and old ones are changed. There are primarily 3 sources of Beta Rules which will be addressed here: Beta Matched Play Mission Rules, Beta Data Slates and Beta Codices. There are also versions of these rules which are latterly confirmed as official rules for the games and therefore reflect how Games Workshop think the game should be played. Beta rules give the opportunity for players to test rules before (if at all) they are made a part of the game. For the avoidance of doubt, all Beta mission rules such as ‘Boots on the Ground’ and ‘the rule of three’ which have since been confirmed as Matched Play Mission rules are in use at the LGT.
After gathering feedback from the attendees of our practice tournaments, the London Open part 1 and 2, we have decided to permit all beta rules, units and dataslates. As noted in the respective publications where these are found, if you want to send GW feedback on these units, you can find their email address therein.
CONVERSIONS, PROXIES and VINTAGE MINIATURES
All conversions should bear a logical resemblance to the original model and should be of comparable dimensions to the latest Games Workshop model. Vintage Models are allowed, however, use the current model’s dimensions and base size for game play decisions. The applies to base sizes more generally. Players should use base extenders if they are using vintage miniatures they do not wish to rebase.
PAINTING REQUIREMENTS
All models should be painted and based to a tabletop standard. This typically means three colours applied in a cohesive and coherent format. Models should have some sort of basing treatment, flying bases may be left clear. Please use common sense in determining if a model is painted to tabletop standard. If you have to ask, then it probably isn’t. Unpainted models will be removed from play. Please note that colour schemes must be consistent across detachments and relate to the rules in use for that detachment. For example, if you have two detachments of Space Marines, one using the Ultramarines rules and one using the Imperial Fists rules both would have to be painted distinctly and consistently, you would not be allowed to use models painted like black templars for both detachments etc.and each detachment using different rules needs to be visually distinct from each other so that your opponent can tell at a glance which model is from which detachment and has which rules. So long as your opponents are not having to constantly ask what does what, then you will not be penalized.
LIVE STREAMING
Please be aware that this event is live streamed on the internet. Your game may be picked to be featured on our live stream.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
-Your painted and based army
-2 copies of your army list. One for yourself and your opponents, and one for the judges who will walk around during the event to collect these.
-This player’s pack (a digital copy is fine)
-Dice and tape measure
-6 objective markers numbered 1 to 6
-Rules, including core rule book, codices, indices and any FAQs relevant to your army
REGISTRATION
We will be pre-registering all players in the 40k GT in advance of the event. This will enable us to do the first round draw in the days leading up to the event, and will mean you can go straight to your designated table on day 1 without any queues and start playing.
How registration will work:
Gameplay
MATCHING
Players will be drawn randomly for the first round, with a ‘Swiss system’ being used to determine pairings for rounds 2 to 5 - winners are pitted against winners with similar scores, and losers are pitted against losers with similar scores. You will not play the same person twice which may occasionally lead you to be playing someone a few places ahead or behind you in the rankings in stead of your most closely ranked competitor.
CHAPTER APPROVED
The event will be using the Matched Play rules of the main rulebook and Chapter Approved, including faction rules and points values published therein, unless superseded by a more recently published source - e.g. Codex. The ‘Beta’ rules such as those found in Chapter Approved or the FAQ will be in use.
SPORTSMANSHIP
All games should be played in a friendly, albeit competitive, manner. Any player not acting accordingly may be penalised. In the unlikely event that you have any grievance with another player’s behaviour, please raise this with a judge.
We will be operating a yellow card, red card system for sportsmanship infractions, but please bear in mind that we are only able to adjudicate in a situation if we are called to the table. Repeat offenders may be asked to leave with no ticket refund.bIf you suspect your opponent of cheating intentionally, please notify the head judge. Any players found to be playing outside the boundaries of the rules will be notified. Where cheating is intentional, the player will be asked to leave with no refund. If unintentional, a warning will be given and your next opponent will be notified.
Where players are in dispute reference should be made to the ITC code of conduct if a contradiction is present between the ITC CoC and this pack, this pack takes precedent.
FAQ
All Games Workshop FAQs released prior to September 1st will be used. Where an ambiguity is not answered by official FAQs players should follow the process below. If you would like clarity on the use of a rule prior to the event and it is not covered elsewhere, please email us on: LGT40kFAQ@mail.com
RULES DISPUTE PROCESS
Players are encouraged to solve rule disputes between themselves. If the players cannot agree after checking the rules, codices, and FAQs, either roll-off or call a judge. All judges’ decisions are final. If a specific player is found to be repeatedly calling judges for rules queries, they may be penalised for time wasting.
TIME KEEPING
Players are requested to be at their tables on time for the start of a round. If a player is over 15 minutes late they count as missing the game and their opponent will score maximum points for the game. If your opponent is not at the table by the cut off time, please contact a judge.
Chess clocks will be in use at the LGT unless both players agree not to use one but do not take precedence over the official end time of a round. If you and your opponent do not start your game on time because you are both late, instead of allocating 90 minutes to each player, take the remaining time in that round available and divide it between you. If you cannot start on time due to your opponent not being there feel free to start the clock on their time. Free ‘Chess Clock’ apps may be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. If both players agree not to use a clock for their game, judges will not intercede in cases of reported ‘slow play.’ In game 5, if you are on a top table and have scored high enough to potentially win the event; chess clocks are mandatory. At a judge’s discretion, players may be required to use a chess clock. In the unlikely event that you are required to do so, the judge will clearly explain how this will function. Guidance on how to correctly use a chess clock for 40k can be found here.
Time keeping warnings will be announced with 60 minutes and 30 minutes remaining. If players have agreed not to use a chess clock, at the 30 minute warning players should discuss if they will reach 6 game turns. If this is not realistic, players should call a judge who will set an expected length. It is the responsibility of both players to achieve this game length.
Official LANGUAGE
Please note that the official language of the event is English. This means that all attendees are expected to be conversationally fluent in the English and play using English copies of their rules.
Dice rolling apps
Please note that the use of dice rolling apps is not allowed at the LGT 40k GT. These are incredibly easy to hack so that they do not roll fairly and the ‘official’ Games Workshop app is no longer available across all platforms. As such we cannot permit an app to be used when all players do not have equal opportunity to use it.
Using YOUR OPPONENTS DICE
Please note that in the interest of fairness, all dice used in a game may be rolled by either player. You are not permitted to refuse your opponent if they ask to use some of the dice you are using and vice versa.
DAY TWO DROP OUTS
In the case of your opponent not arriving on day two, please report to the judges desk at 09:45. This means that you should wait at your table from 09:30 - 09:45 before reporting to the judges table.
If you would like to drop out of the event after day one, we request that you inform the head judge after submitting your round 3 score or email us at 40kDropOut@mail.com and let us know before 09:30 on Sunday morning or ‘drop’ yourself via the BCP app.
Player advice
Please note that this is a singles championship and games are expected to be played 1 vs 1. If you have spectators at your table, no advice is allowed to be given to one player or another, nor is assistance permitted in moving models, rolling dice or any other behaviour which may give one player an unfair advantage. As the official language of the event is English, if you are conversing with a spectator at your table, please do so in English so that your opponent is not concerned that this rule is being violated.
TERRAIN
The terrain will be pre-set by the Head Judge before the start of each day. If you think the terrain on your table has been moved accidentally, please reset the terrain in accordance with the map provided herein. All terrain rules will be played as per the rules below. All tables will be set up in the layout detailed herein. Please note, to prevent ‘unchargeable’ Knights or other units occupying the entirety of a level of a hill (thus preventing it being possible to get a base within 1”) you are considered to be ‘in base to base contact’ if your base is directly underneath the base of another overhanging model. This only applies if the entirety of the level on which this model is place is occupied. For further guidance on how to use the terrain at an ITC event please reference the terrain pack here. Please note that, as detailed below, there are no enclosed ruins at the LGT.
‘Large L Shape’ to be played using the rules for Ruins from the main rule book. This terrain piece has a base size of 20 x 20 cm and two line of sight blocking wall faces also of 20cm x 20cm. It has 3 levels at 5cm, 10cm and 20cm respectively.
Large L shape external face (right)
‘Small L Shape’ to be played using the rules for Ruins from the main rule book. This terrain piece has a base size of 10 x 20 cm and two line of sight blocking wall faces also of 10cm x 20cm and 10cm x 10cm respectively. It has one level at 10cm.
‘Area Terrain’ to be played using the rules for Craters from the main rule book. Approx 30cm x 20cm.
‘Hill’ with 3 levels, approx. 30cm x 20cm, 20cm x 15cm and 10cm x 10cm respectively. Each level is approx 5cm high. To be played using the rules for Hills from the main rulebook.
How to reset terrain
If you wish to check the terrain at your table has not been moved and is set up as intended, please follow the guidance provided via the map below. The terrain is set up in a symmetrical fashion, although some pieces are rotated, therefore dimensions are only provided for one piece of each terrain type, this can be mirrored for other terrain pieces of the same type. The guidance below should be self explanatory, however if you require a judge to reset the terrain at your table before you start playing, please contact the judges desk:
missions
After careful consideration and taking into account feedback from the London Open, we have decided to use a very slight variation on the 2019 ITC Championship missions with some mild changes, listed below. This decision has been made so that the missions used at the LGT can be as balanced as possible, to ensure that games are not won or lost due to a single dice roll, drawing the wrong cards or other similar random events with huge impacts. Furthermore, the 2019 missions introduce greater variety that the 2018 ITC missions, thus helping to solve the potential issue of games ‘feeling’ too similar.
The ITC 2019 missions can be found here, for reference and the changes we have made to them are listed below. For convenience, the relevant content from the ITC pack has been copied in the pages which follow with our changes incorporated.
HOW THE MISSIONS WORK
This section describes the format Guidelines for the 2019 8th Edition ITC Champion Mission pack. In this section, you will find the rules for pre-game setup, including deployment and scoring for Primary and Secondary missions. Unless otherwise stated, all of the five missions listed below follow these steps.
Step 1: Before any dice are rolled, players adjust terrain back to the LGT standard (detailed in this pack). Both players choose Warlord Traits, Psychic Powers, spend pre-deployment command points, free relic, and any additional Relics they wish to use. These should be written or notated clearly for reference in game.
Step 2: Players reveal the items from step 1 to each other simultaneously.
Step 1: Players place objectives following scenario guidelines as listed on each mission. Instructions for placing objectives are as follows:
A: All objectives are considered to be on the ground floor and may not be placed inside of enclosed buildings. Move terrain if necessary to accommodate this requirement.
B: Distances are measured to and from models to the closest point of the objective marker when determining which models are in range to control an objective, adjusting as noted above, for the size of the objective
Step 2: Each player chooses 3 of the Secondary Mission Objectives listed below. A player may only choose each mission once. They then reveal them to their opponent simultaneously.
Deployment
All missions will use the deployment method as outlined below. This has been implemented to ensure that you know who is going first when you deploy so that if you are going second you can deploy in the most resilient positions as possible if you so wish, thus limiting damage you take from heavy firepower gunline armies.
Each game lasts 6 Battle Rounds. At the game’s conclusion, the player with the higher total score is the winner. If one player chooses to concede before the game has come to a natural conclusion, they automatically score 0 points and their opponent is marked as the victor. At the time of concession, the victor keeps their current score and earns 4 points per remaining Battle Round towards the Primary Mission, assuming their army has enough forces to accomplish mission objectives. Additionally, the victor also earns the maximum number of possible Secondary Mission points left to them, also assuming the victor’s army has the capability to accomplish the mission objectives.
Example Scenario: If it were the end of Battle Round 3 when the losing player concedes, and the victor chose Recon for their secondary mission, but had not yet scored any points for that secondary mission. The victor would earn 3 total points for the secondary mission as they would have 3 more turns to earn those points had the game continued, assuming they have at least 4 units left on the table with which to fulfill the mission’s scoring parameters. If they have 3 or less units left, they score no points for that Secondary Mission as it would not be possible for them to fulfill the scoring parameters even if the game had gone on to a natural conclusion.
If one player is tabled (a player has no qualifying models on the table at the end of any player turn), the tabled player keeps their points earned up until that point in the game, and their opponent earns points in the same fashion as outlined above.
Players should take careful note that tabling your opponent does not automatically score maximum points for the mission. Concession also does not automatically award max points to the victor!
Each player scores points at the end of their player turn.
Each Player also scores points at the end of each Battle Round.
Each player may score up to 4 pts for each of the following Secondary Missions, for a total of 12 between the three they’ve chosen. These points can be scored at any time unless otherwise specified in the description.
<Secondary> objectives marked with an asterisk (*) “stack “and may be scored concurrently with other objectives. Unless so marked, no secondary objective may be scored concurrently with any other secondary objective.
Headhunter: 1pt for each enemy Character that is destroyed.
Kingslayer: Choose an enemy model that is a Character.
Marked for Death: Choose 4 of your opponent’s units with a Power Level of 7+. Earn 1 pt for each of these units destroyed.
Titan Slayers: For every 8 wounds lost by enemy units with the Titanic keyword in total throughout the course of the game, earn 1 point regardless of wounds being “healed” or “regenerated” etc. You may choose when to count wounds dealt to any one Titanic model but as soon as you do, that model will no longer yield points for any other non-stacking secondary mission.
Example: One enemy Titanic model loses 4 wounds turn 1, and a different enemy Titanic unit loses 12 wounds turn 2 for a total of 16 wounds lost in total to enemy Titanic models. You choose to count those wounds and earn 2pts towards this objective but neither of those Titanic units may give up points for other secondary missions that require destroying an enemy unit.
Gang Busters: For every 6 wounds inflicted on a unit that contains more than 1 model with 3 or more wounds, score 1 point. Units with the SWARM keyword do not count towards this mission.
Big Game Hunter: 1 point for every enemy model with the Monster or Vehicle keyword and 7+ wounds destroyed.
Pick Your Poison: Pick up to four keywords from the following list: psyker, fly, biker, vehicle, monster, titanic. You cannot pick a keyword more than once. For each keyword you pick, nominate an enemy unit with that keyword, you cannot nominate a unit for more than 1 keyword. Score 1 point for each nominated unit that is destroyed.
The Butcher’s Bill: Destroy 2+ enemy units during a player turn to earn 1 Point.
*The Reaper: For every 20 enemy models destroyed, earn 1 point.
*Recon: Have a unit at least partially in each table quarter at the end of your player turn. A unit may only count as being in one table quarter at a time for the purposes of this rule. 1pt per turn.
*Behind Enemy Lines: If at least one of your units is entirely in the enemy Deployment Zone at the start of your turn, earn 1 Point. A unit is entirely within if every model in the unit is at least partially in the enemy Deployment Zone.
*Ground Control: Earn 1 point for each objective held at the end of the last Battle Round played.
*King of the Hill: At the end of the Battle Round the player who chose this secondary scores 1 point if they have two non-character, multi-model, units wholly within 6 inches of the center of the table. Units that score King of the Hill cannot score Recon, Ground Control, or Engineers. Multi-model in this instance means a unit that began the game with more than 1 model.
*Engineers: Select two non-character/non-fortification units from your army to be Engineers. Starting from Battle Round 2, if either of these units starts and ends your turn within 3” of an objective marker you control, and it did not make any attacks or manifest any psychic powers during your turn, earn 1 point at the end of that turn. These units may not score this objective if they join other units during the course of play or split into multiple units. Units chosen to be Engineers may never benefit from a rule that keeps them from being the target of attacks, Cloud of Flies, for example. They can benefit from terrain blocking Line of Sight to them.
*Old School: Earn 1 point for the following:
Seize Ground Bonus Point: If a player holds or contests 5 or more objectives at the end of their player turn, gain 1 point.
For an objective to be contested, both players have models within 3” of it but neither controls it. This typically occurs because both players have an equal number of models within range of the objective and either none of them are Objective Secured, or all of them are.
3 objectives: The players roll off, the winner of this dice roll places 1 objective in their deployment zone more than 6” from a table edge and 12” from any other objective followed by the player who list this dice roll placing an objective in their deployment zone in accordance with the same restrictions. 1 objective is placed in the middle of the table.
Cut to the Heart Bonus Point: If a player controls the center objective and their opponent’s objective at the end of their player turn, they gain 1 point.
4 objectives placed as shown:
Nexus Control Bonus Point: If a player holds all four objectives at the end of their player turn, they score 1 point.
5 objectives: 1 objective is placed in the middle of the table. Next, the players roll off, starting with the player that won this dice roll, each player places 1 objective anywhere on the table more than 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective. Each player then places 1 objective in their opponent’s deployment zone more than 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective.
What’s Yours Is Mine Bonus Point: If a player controls both of the objectives they placed on the table, they earn 1 point.
Precious Cargo Bonus Point: Before the game begins, each player chooses a separate objective--their Priority Objective--to defend starting with the player that chose their deployment zone first. After deployment zones have been determined but before deployment, each player may move their Priority Objective in any direction up to 6” from its original position so long as it is more than 6” from a table edge and 12” from another objective.
If a player holds their opponent’s Priority Objective at the end of their player turn, score 1 bonus point.
Army lists
Army Lists should be submitted no later than 31st August 23:59 UCT(GMT). This is to allow them all to be posted online before the event for list checking and so that we can do the first round draw before the event. If you don't complete the registration process before this occurs, you will get paired manually on the morning of the event and won't be eligible for any awards as the army lists will go live at the time of the first round draw.
During the registration process you will be asked to copy and paste your army list into the appropriate field of the registration form. You can find instructions on how to format your army list here, please use the ETC format and make sure you include the title block with your name in it: http://bit.ly/Army-list-format Please note that army lists submitted via our registration form are automatically uploaded to the Best Coast Pairings app. The app now automatically checks if an army list has been submitted in an incorrect format and will not accept these lists. It is vital that you submit your list in the correct format to avoid having to do so on the morning of Day-1 which may result in penalties.
Once Army Lists have been collated into a document for list checking, players will need to review this document to see if any issues have been raised with there list. If an error has been identified, it is the players responsibility to correct this error by updating their list in the BCP app before the start of round one.
To prepare your army list open the document found at the link above. Click on ‘file’ then ‘make a copy.’ Once you have saved your own copy you will be able to edit the document and prepare your army list
You should draft your own army list using this template and copy and paste the entirety of your army list from the ‘++++++’ above your name, down to the end of your army list. You do not need to copy and paste the instructions portion of this document.
scoring
The scoring system and respective awards are designed to reward the effort invested in all elements of the 40k hobby. As such, it is possible for players of all abilities to win something.
PAINTING SCORE
During the first day of the event, our judges will be walking around during the games to assess painting and will be removing unpainted models from play. During this time, they will ask players if they want to be considered for the Best Painted Award. They will hand any player who wants to be considered for the award a name card, and will invite them to set up their army during the lunch break on day 2 alongside their name card. All players will be provided with a single voting slip and can vote on the army they wish to win the award. There will be an overall winner along with runner up prizes. To ensure all of our “best painted” nominees are up to the standard expected for such a prestigious award, only armies that meet the following criteria will be eligible for the awards:
SPORTSMANSHIP SCORE
If you have a problem with the behaviour of one or more of your opponents, please tell a judge. During day 1, each player will receive a single card on which to indicate their nomination for Most Sporting Opponent. At the end of game 5, players will vote on who was their most sporting opponent throughout the weekend. All players who receive 5 votes for Most Sporting will win this award. In the unlikely event that no one is nominated 5 times, this prize will be awarded the players who received 4 nominations.
GAMING SCORE
We have decided to make a change to last year’s format, as we noticed that most of the top 10 players finished with 5 wins and were differentiated by the number of Tournament Points they scored, not the amount of games they had won record. Additionally some players who won all 5 of their games last year ended up finishing around 50th, due to only winning their games by a narrow margin. The new format will therefore have very little effect on who wins the top prize. It will, however, allow for us to add prizes this year for each ‘Bracket’. This means that there will be a ‘Best General’ for each of the following brackets, note that bracketing is done based on how many games you win, thus draws have no effect on which bracket you fall into, albeit they still count for ranking purposes:
Accordingly, a Win/Draw/Lose format will be used to determine gaming rankings and pairing for rounds after round 1, which will be drawn randomly. The player at the end of the event with the most wins will be crowned the gaming champion with Tournament Points being utilised as the first tie breaker, strength of schedule as the second tie-break, total points destroyed in game 5 as the third tie-break and if the very unlikely event occurs that two players have identical scores a best out of three game of rock, paper, scissors will decide the winner. With this change implemented a player who scores small victories on all 5 of their games will end up finishing around 12-16th rather than 60th. So remember - even if you lose, 1, 2, 3, 4 or all your games, you can still win an award.
