Astrology for Confused Bitches

Part I: General Info and Background

Helpful basic info

  • The 12 zodiac signs are the foundation of astrology. They represent the archetypes/personalities present in an individual.
  • You may only know your Sun sign, but your personality is affected by all 12 signs, some more than others.
  • Depending on the planetary positions at the time you were born, different signs’ energies may be more prominent than others in your personality. Ex: If your chart shows that a lot of the planets at the time you were born were placed in Libra, that sign would be more prominent in your personality. If there aren't any planets in Capricorn, you wouldn’t show as many Capricornian traits in your personality.

The birth/natal chart explained

  • The birth chart consists of a zodiac wheel, or a perfect 360º circle that represents the ecliptic
  • Everyone’s birth chart (also referred to as a natal chart) is unique based on the exact time, date, and location of when they were born.
  • The birth chart is essentially a snapshot of the positions of the planets when a person is born and is divided into 12 sections - one for each zodiac sign
  • It is important to know the exact time of birth (to the minute) in order to get an accurate birth chart because the planets are always in orbit, so knowing the exact time will accurately show where exactly the planets were located at the time of birth.
  • The birth chart is made up of 3 important components: Planets, Signs, and Houses

Who tf is zodiac?

  • The zodiac is an oblong circle that spans the sky and is 8 degrees above and below (north and south) of the Sun's path from the perspective of the Earth.
  • The ecliptic is the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun → basically the movement/path of the Sun -- Why is this important? The signs of the Zodiac come from the constellations that lie along this line
  •  Like the planets, the Sun moves around the zodiac, making one complete circuit each year. Every month it covers a different constellation of the zodiac, which is the reason why there are 12 constellations and zodiac signs

Chart of the Ecliptic path

Here's a chart since the concept of paths, equinoxes, solstices, and the divination of the planets is pretty complicated:

Why do my birth chart and the placements of signs in different parts of the zodiac matter?

  • The placements in a birth chart show many different things, such as, where each constellation/sign was in the sky, what planet was aligned with each sign, what house the signs and planets were in, and the angles and aspects of the signs and planets during the moment a person was born
  • This might be confusing at first, but once you understand the definitions and meanings of the importance and qualities of each sign, placement, aspect, house, planet, etc.. it begins to connect and you can begin to fully understand each part of your chart
  • For example, if your chart reveals a lot of Taurus placements throughout, your energies and traits would be highly influenced by the basic traits of a Taurian
  • If you don’t have a certain sign in your chart then that simply means that certain sign’s traits do not show up or are underdeveloped in your personality

The different parts of astrology broken down:

  • The planets tell us which human energies we’re working with - they are the forces that act
  • The signs tell us how these energies manifest - they represent how the planets act
  • The houses tell us where we direct these energies and represent different facets of life (e.g.; money, spirituality, relationship, career) - they represent where the planets act
  • The aspects tell us how these energies relate to each other within us - they are the relationship between 2 planets and how many degrees apart they are in a chart

Sun, Moon, and Rising/Ascendant Explained:

Sun Sign →  the sign the Sun was traveling through during the time of your birth; the most powerful planet; most important and influential planet placement in your birth chart; the part of you that others see and what’s most apparent on the outside

Sun: our basic personality, identity, ego, and consciousness

Area of influence: self, main concerns, vitality

  • The Sun won’t fully show itself before the age of 30. As you grow older, you realize that you don’t have to ask for permission, and become more and more authentic. In the first part of life, we resemble our rising sign more than our Sun sign.

Moon Sign →  the sign the Moon was positioned in during the time of your birth; one of the three most important planets in a birth chart; the part of you that only you see

Moon: our emotions, instincts, and the unconscious

Area of influence: emotions, instincts, habits

Rising/Ascendant Sign →  the sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the time of your birth; one of the three most important planets in a birth chart; the part of you that represents your outer personality or image; how others may see you

Rising/Ascendant: our outermost layer, first impression, and physical appearance

  • Denotes your ruling planet which carries the energy of that sign AKA your chart ruler.

*The terms Rising and Ascendant are used interchangeably

Chart ruler (and how to find it):

  • Your chart ruler pinpoints which placement in your chart has the biggest influence on you throughout your life

How to find your chart ruler:       (Using my chart as an example)

  1. Find your Rising sign      I am a Rising Taurus
  2. Find the planet that rules your Rising Sign      Venus rules Taurus
  3. Find where that planet is present in your chart (the house and/or degrees it’s in)    Venus is in Sagittarius and the 8th House in my chart
  4. Combine all of the info    My chart ruler is my 8th House Sagittarius Venus

The 4 House Cusps: Ascendant, Descendant, Nadir, and Midheaven

→ The Houses of the zodiac are in a 360º circle and have significant angles which are called angular house cusps. Those cusps include the Ascendant, the Descendant, Nadir (Imum Coeli/IC), and the Midheaven (MC).

  • If planets in your chart touch these angles, they have particular significance in your life and their meaning is amplified in your chart
  • The 4 cusps correlate with thee 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th Houses
  • These 4 angles indicate power, strength, and activity

The chart to the left shows all 4 House cusps’ placements.

Ascendant

  • Marks the cusp of the 1st House
  • Planets at the Ascendant or in the 1st House represent strength of character and personality -- the power of a person’s self
  • Rules how we begin new projects and our attitude towards new experiences

Descendant

  • Marks the cusp of the 7th House

House Divisions

→ The Houses are divided into 4 hemispheric quadrants - Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern

  • When looking at your chart, the hemispheric emphasis can be determined by where the majority of your planets fall in your chart

Eastern Hemisphere

  • The left half of the chart/zodiac circle
  • Represents a person’s impact on the world
  • If a majority of your planets fall in the Eastern Hemisphere, you tend to be self-motivated, demonstrating initiative, independence, and assertiveness

Western Hemisphere

  • The right half of the chart/zodiac circle

  • Many planets in this hemisphere may indicate that a person is molded by circumstances, is influenced by their surroundings and the people around them, and is receptive and oriented towards others

Southern Hemisphere

  • The top half of the chart/zodiac circle
  • Represents social and public life
  • Many planets in this hemisphere mean a person is likely to be more extroverted, oriented towards career, involved with the world, and are satisfied by the approval of the public

Northern Hemisphere

  • The bottom half of the chart/zodiac circle
  • Represents the self and family
  • Many planets in this hemisphere mean a person is likely to be introverted, primarily interested in personal pursuits or pleasures, and their motivation for achievement comes from self-satisfaction
  • Oriented toward self-improvement and internal development

Part VII: The Aspects

  • The aspects are the angles formed between 2 or more planets in our birth chart -- they indicate how our planetary energies relate to each other, explain how different facets of our personality harmonize and blend OR how they create paradox, tension, and complexity
  • Importance of Aspects: As for aspects, the most important are the conjunction, the opposition, the trine, and the square. The power of an aspect depends on how exact it is; aspects that are exact within 1 degree of arc are key indicators for the personality.

Keep in mind: The horoscope circle contains 360º

The aspects in a chart are a contributing factor in your entire horoscope. The combination of all of the parts of a chart (Sun sign, Moon sign, Rising sign, Planets, Houses, etc.) make up your unique and unduplicatable personality and self.

Aspect- the relationship between 2 planets and is based entirely on how many degrees apart they are in your chart

In more technical terms → As the planets move in their elongated orbits around the Sun, they form various angular relationships with one another, using the Sun or Earth as the center -- ultimately creating an aspect

  • The aspects are the more specific details of our psyches that make us who we are, shaping our personalities and lives
  • Aspects fall into 2 broad categories -- major and minor

Major aspect- represent the strongest degrees between 2 planets or points in a birth chart

  • The most important major aspect is called a conjunction, which is roughly 0º between 2 planets

Both major and minor aspects can be further categorized as either harmonious or disharmonious

→ Disharmonious aspects aren’t ‘bad’, they are what give us passion, intensity, and drive. They’re what propel us forward and drive us to resolve tension through creativity, action, and ambition.

→  This chart explains the different kinds of major aspects and angles

Major Aspects

Conjunction

Two planets falling in the same degree of the same sign, or within 10º of each other ()

  • A conjunction is the strongest aspect between 2 planets or points
  • This aspect intensifies the energy of each planet and allows those energies to work together completely in a person’s personality
  • If you have a conjunction in your chart between 2 or more planets, this point on your chart will be an emphasis of your personality and life trajectory -- if the conjunction is exact to the degree, the influence is more powerful
  • Powerful and is usually a beneficial influence

Trine

Two planets falling 120º apart, or within 9º of that in either direction

  • The most harmonious aspect between 2 planets -- energies blend easily
  • If there are too many trines in your chart, you could be complacent or lazy- content with little action or effort
  • Brings advantage and ease

Opposition

Two planets falling 180º apart, or within 9º of that in either direction

  • Disharmonious aspect - 2 opposing energies that create tension and friction
  • Can generate dynamic and creative passion which eventually leads to growth and intrigue
  • Can bring strain, discordance, or separation but are thought of as challenges to growth and achievement

Sextile

Two planets falling 60º apart, or within 6º of that in either direction

  • Considered harmonious, but is weaker than the trine
  • Its beneficial aspect is that it brings opportunity
  • More effort is required to access the benefits of this aspect

Square

Two planets falling 90º apart, or within 9º of that in either direction

  • Challenging and stressful
  • Indicates friction and obstacles but eventually build character and lead to wisdom, drive, and depth -- in better words, a square indicates an area in a person’s chart where they can develop drive and strength of character by overcoming difficulties

Minor Aspects

Quincunx

Two planets falling 150º apart, or within 2º of that in either direction

  • A challenging aspect because the planets in a quincunx cannot be merged -- because of this, there is a tendency to compartmentalize the two areas of life indicated by the planets and points involved
  • Both planets/points in a quincunx represent distinct needs and areas of life, and it can take a lot of energy to sort them into different compartments
  • Quincunxes can often make us feel that external events or other people are forcing us to separate, compartmentalize, or redirect the energies of the planets involved

Semisquare

Two planets falling 45º apart, or within 2º of that in either direction

  • Mildly disharmonious; similar to but much less powerful than a square
  • One of the analytical aspects which show tension but also challenges that can help us grow and learn
  • Conflicts are not as immediately apparent as they are in the case of the square, making it easier to avoid conflicts and miss an opportunity for growth
  • Can indicate subtle tensions which we would rather ignore

Sesquisquare

Two planets falling 135º apart, or within 2º of that in either direction

  • Similar to the semisquare and square
  • Indicate themes of a long-term and stubborn nature
  • Create tension and challenge us to work and learn

Semisextile

Two planets falling 30º apart, or within 2º  of that in either direction

  • Mildly harmonious
  • Brings opportunity but is much less powerful than a sextile

Aspect Patterns

Aspect patterns involve 3 or more planets configuring in different ways -- they are patterns of angles between points or planets, forming specific shapes

  • The planets or points in an aspect pattern form dynamic relationships with each other -- their energies are working together and are mutually influential
  • Aspect patterns can be either harmonious or challenging, but the challenging aspect patterns hold great potential

Grand Trine- an equilateral triangle, formed by 3 trines, or 120º angles -- looks like a basic triangle on your chart

  • A Grand Trine pattern represents an easy flow of energies and natural gifts - it is harmonious and a very stable configuration
  • The character traits and talents that come from a Grand Trine in your chart may come to you so easily and naturally that you may not understand why those things don't come naturally to others
  • Challenging aspects may be necessary to provide the motivation to develop or grow character traits and talents
  • Typically, the three planets/points in a Grand Trine fall in the same element (fire, air, water, earth).

Grand Trine in Fire: Represent gifts of inspiration, passion, or athleticism

Grand Trine in Earth: Represent the gifts of grounding, stability, pragmatism, and sensuality

Grand Trine in Air: Represent gifts such as talents of the mind, communication, logic, and wit

Grand Trine in Water: Represent gifts of natural empathy and the ability to nurture, emotionally support, and heal others

T-square- a right triangle, formed by one opposition (180º angle), and 2 squares (90º angles) -- looks like the letter T on your chart

  • This pattern represents powerful struggles, courage, and drive, which can lead to suffering and conflict, as well as considerable achievement
  • If there is a T-square in your chart, you release the tension of your opposition through the tip of the triangle (also known as the focal point). You’ll apply yourself rigorously to whatever activities and energies the focal point represents.
  • Can lead to great passion and periods of intense work -- comes in erratic bursts

Grand Cross- a square, formed by four points- 2 oppositions (180º angles) and 4 squares (90º angles)

  • This pattern represents remarkable gifts, accompanied by great struggles and inflexibility
  • Indicates that a person is gifted in different areas of life and sometimes find it challenging to pick one to focus on -- forced to find their center, balance, and harmony in a way
  • Gives incredible capacity to become accomplished and significant in the world
  • A Grand Cross can come with a series of challenges and crises in life

Stellium- 3 or more planets fall in a single sign or house in a birth chart

  • This pattern indicates extreme focus on the energies or tendencies of this house or sign
  • Gives the ability to a person to direct tremendous drive, self-development, awareness, and activity toward these areas of life
  • Looking at the opposite sign or house can be beneficial to learn how to find balance

Part VIII: Important Placements / Misc. Notes

Most influential planets:

  • The most active and potent houses in the birth chart are the 1st, 10th, 7th, 4th, 11th and 5th houses (in that order). Out of these, the angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th) in particular tend to be the most active. Planets in these houses show up loudly and will definitely make a lasting impact. This is because the angular houses represent key topics and themes in our life, such as personality, family, relationships, and career. For most of us, these topics are the common thread of our lives.

        Planets in “joy”

  • Each planet also have a “favourite” house in the chart, which is the place of that planet’s joy. A planet in joy will generally be quite happy, though of course this won’t cancel out other astro data, such as when the planet is in a sign it doesn’t really like. The joys of the planets are: Sun in the 9th, Moon in the 3rd, Mercury in the 1st, Venus in the 5th, Mars in the 6th, Jupiter in the 11th, Saturn in the 12th.

Importance of Midheaven, the Ascendant, and North Node

  • The ASC, MC, and the nodes are very important as they describe how the world sees the individual, the skills they can offer to society, and what karma they bring into this life.

North & South nodes, Pluto Polarity Point

  • the North/South Node axis and the Pluto/Pluto Polarity Point axis will tell you about the path you’re on and the reason behind your personality makeup in this lifetime. These axes underlie everything else in the birth chart and create a continuum across lifetimes.

you are comparing astrology charts of different people and asking ‘why the houses represents different signs in each chart?’. Meaning, while Aries sign represents 1st house in one chart represents 12th house in another chart?

In a clock, numbers 1 to 12 are placed and does not move, whereas, 3 limbs move around the clock in different speed to represent three different units of the time period ( hour, minute and second).

In a same manner, Signs from Aries to Pisces, are fixed in a chart. Not only the Signs, also Stars, Ownership of the Signs to Planets and few more items are fixed based on various meaningful mathematical calculations.

Like limbs of the clock, there are moving planets around the Earth, which are placed in each Signs based on position relative to the Earth. The other rotating or moving through these fixed Signs are reference points such as Ascendant, Houses, etc.

Hope it is clear until now! If so, read on……

Fastest moving planet around earth is Moon, which moves from one sign to another in roughly in 60 hours or 2 1/2 days. So the planetary position will remain same for at least 60 hours, assuming no other planets moving to another sign. Then, all the birth happens during this 60 hour period will have same chart but all will not have same character, life, etc.

So there are TWO important factors comes in, which is precisely identifying Moon and Sun, relative to Earth at the time of birth.

Within above mentioned 60 hours Moon travels through 2 and 1/4th of Star. So, the Star in which Moon placed is called Birth Star.

We all know that Earth rotates itself and completes ONE rotation in a Day. During this rotation, placement of Sun to the place on Earth changes through out this 24 hour Day. Hence a reference point is required to place this Rising Sun, which moves through out the the Day. This reference point is called Ascendant in an Astrology Chart. Please note that Sun’s placement to whole Earth is shown by the placement of Sun in a Sign.

So, this Ascendant changes every two hours from the time of Sun Rise for a place on the Earth. So, we all know that Sun Rise timing is differs from place to place, say if the distance between them 50 miles and moving East to West. ( like time change from place to place).

Houses are relative to Ascendant, meaning, FIRST HOUSE is the Sign in which the Ascendant is placed and 2nd House is the Sign next on the right (rotating clockwise), and so on.

Ascendant is the reference point placed in one of the 12 Signs based on the Sun Rise time at a particular place (place of birth). That’s why, place of birth is important for creating Vedic Astrology Chart.

If you have understood above, you can understand why the house are placed in different signs.
