PROPOSED CHANGES FOR TEACHERS OF ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES

UNDER UESF/SFUSD TENTATIVE AGREEMENT FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR

(February 2022)

2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR

2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR

High school teachers shall have a duty-free preparation period equal in length to a teaching period.

All teachers of AP classes shall receive an annual stipend of $3,000.

X

1 additional prep period for teaching an AP class with greater than 25 students enrolled.

X

Number of AP classes offered to students corresponds to student enrollment and interest.

How many teachers are currently receiving the extra AP prep period?

190 teachers at SFUSD teach AP courses. Of those, 182 receive the extra prep period.

What is the cost of an extra prep for AP teachers?

SFUSD spends approximately $6.5 million annually on the additional prep period for AP teachers.

Will fewer AP classes be offered to students in 2022-2023?

No, changing AP prep will not affect the number of classes offered to students. The offering of courses is always driven by student academic needs and requirements and choice. Elective courses, such as some AP courses, are determined by student choice.

How does SFUSD compare to other local school districts when it comes to the practice of offering an extra AP prep period?

Based on our research, SFUSD is the only district in the Bay Area that has been offering an additional prep to teachers of AP.  According to a College Board analysis several years back, SFUSD may be the only school district with the practice of giving an extra prep for AP classes.

What are the proposed changes to the contract with UESF related to AP prep?

In the proposed changes, the extra AP prep period would be suspended for the 2022-2023 school year. All AP teachers would instead receive a $3,000 stipend.

Will some teachers be laid off if the extra AP prep is eliminated?

The reduction in extra AP preps could lead to some teachers losing their current positions. This may not result in a job loss for current teachers of AP; actual layoffs are based on seniority and credentials/qualifications, and they may be absorbed by vacancies as well. The final numbers are dependent on many factors including retirements and resignations.

What other SFUSD teachers receive an extra prep period beyond the contractual period for all teachers?

Department Chairs receive an extra prep period at SFUSD. No other teachers across all disciplines and grade levels receive an extra prep period.
