At this point, the school provides a subscription to those students who are enrolled in the ISF Academy Curricular Band only. As the servers for this program are in the USA, SmartMusic company must follow Coppa laws. This means that students under the age of 13 are not allowed to sign up for accounts, and parents must do so for them. This program is an excellent practice tool and extension activity for instrumental students (both Orchestral and Concert Band) http://www.smartmusic.com/products/students/

After Downloading and installing, you need to Log into the app.
After you have purchased, installed and activated:
Open SmartMusic, or if SmartMusic is already open, click Home. SmartMusic Home appears.
From SmartMusic Home, click Log In.
For the profile, please choose:
School: ISF Academy
Ensembles: Curricular class OR Junior Band (you may choose additional ones as well if you are a part of other groups)
Instrument: Choose the one you are playing in the ISF Curricular Band or ISF Junior / Intermediate Band
Type your school email address or username and password.
To let SmartMusic remember your email address, select the Remember Me check box.
To let SmartMusic keep you logged in to SmartMusic until you manually log out, select the Keep me logged in check box.
The first time you log in (or the first time in the new school year), you will need to enroll in the “band class”. This will allow me to send the music to you to practice, and allow you to submit things to me for feedback!
Click the Enroll button
Then Choose the correct band class from the list of ISF classes by clicking the Enroll button beside the name.
If you do not see the class, then you may not have chosen ISF as your school.
On the left side of the screen, click Find Music.
Under Browse By Category, click Method Books. (Intermediate and Advanced students may also look through the solos and exercises categories)
A list of method books sorted by category appear.
Click a category button at the top of the screen, such as Band or General Music to navigate to the specific category of method book.
Select the method book to add it to “My Library”
This book will now be available in the “method books” section under “My Library”
After you open a piece or a method book, the top part shows all of the controls
The Tempo (speed) is set one of two ways. Either drag the blue slider, OR type a number into the box. A “Walking” speed is usually about 60-90 beats per minute. The tempo that opens with a piece is the tempo that a piece should be played at AFTER the student has learned all the notes.
Students should ALWAYS START with a slower tempo, and once they can play it 85% or better at the slower tempo, then gradually increase the tempo until you are at the suggested tempo.
Start and stop points are meant for students to work on specific sections only. For example, if a student is consistently making mistakes in measures (bars) 5-6, then they could set the “from” to bar 5 beat 1 and the “end” at bar 6 beat 4. Choosing “Loop” means that they will get to play that bit over and over and over again.
The “tracks” section allows students to choose what they hear as they play. If they are using this feature, I strongly recommend they use a pair of headphones (with the volume turned down). “My Part” plays the student line. “Accompaniment” plays the back up band. Students can choose to have none, one or both of these checked. The “Assessment” option should always be turned on.
The wonderful part about SmartMusic is that it records the student as they practice. It will show the student which notes they had correct (green), which notes were correct but too early/late (red), and which notes were incorrect (red).
To begin a recording, press the “Start Take” button and follow the prompts on the screen. The computer will count you in, the same way your teacher does.
After you are finished, look at the black notes. Do you know what the fingerings for those notes are? If not, click on it and it will show you:
To save a recording, click on the MP3 button and follow the prompts
If you are wanting to submit an assignment to the teacher, you need to first choose the assignment from the assignment list in the homepage, and then after you have your best take, click the “submit” button
