IN BRIEF: Associate Dean’s Corner

A few thoughts on professionalism

Professionalism takes on many forms and one is just as important as the next in order to have a fulfilling and successful career. How an individual speaks and interacts with others tells us of their respect and regard for them; how one appears and presents oneself tells us of their regard for themselves; and how one conducts and presents their work tells us of their regard for their work and their profession. Embedded within each of these interactions include a myriad of avenues to express professionalism: one’s choice of words, one’s style of communication, respect toward others, enjoyment of others, the celebration of great science, empathy toward failure, going the extra mile to create the best speech, manuscript, figure, powerpoint slide as well as innumerable other venues. One can be gifted or average; in the end it is the delivery that really counts.
