Welcome to our Newest Major:  Daniel Quisenberry - Geol.  We are excited to have you join our department! Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can best support you with your goals. (Geol = Geology major, AEG = Applied Environmental Geosciences major, EST = Earth Science Teaching major)

URGENT -- Please Participate in Course Evaluations: Course evaluations began Sunday, April 6, and will continue through Sunday, April 20. These evaluations help instructors improve their teaching and are used in tenure and promotion decisions -- your feedback is very important and we are hoping for full participation.  Students will continue to receive automatic email reminders until you've completed the evaluation for each of your courses.  If you have a couple of minutes right now, you can scan this QR code and complete the evaluations with your phone or tablet.

Congratulations Graduates!  The Department of Geosciences is proud to announce its latest graduating class (see photo below):

Shalane Crosland                Chase Dickinson                  Kari Godfrey

Rhett Howell                         Chad Price                             Julie Taylor

All of the graduates are geology majors, and each will earn their Bachelor of Science degree at the end Summer Term 2014 after completing summer field camp. Please join us in congratulating your friends and fellow students.

End of a Geologic Era: This is a bittersweet announcement; Dr. Jim Wilson will be retiring at the end of this semester after 32 years of teaching at WSU. Jim has been a key member of our team and will be greatly missed. GEO students know him as the cheerful and demanding instructor for our Earth Materials class (GEO 2050). Jim and his wife, Paula, will be moving to his home state of Alabama to begin their new adventures. Please feel free to email your remembrances and best wishes.

Happy New Year: The 2014-2105 academic year will begin Monday, May 5, with the start of summer classes. If you haven't seen it already, there is a new design for university calendars on the WSU website.  We've attached the Summer 2014 and Fall 2014 Academic Calendars to this email for you.

Updated 3-Year Provisional Schedule: To aid you with your academic planning, the department maintains a running, 3-year provisional schedule of classes.   Please note that this is our best estimation and is subject to change.  Regular meetings (once each semester) with your faculty advisor will ensure that you have the most up-to-date information.

                Advisors:

                Geology (BS/BA): Dr. Jeff Eaton

Applied Environmental Geosciences (BS): Dr. Marek Matyjasik

Earth Science Teaching (BS): Dr. Rick Ford

Mark Your Calendars I: The College of Science's Academic Honors and Awards Program is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15, in Lind Lecture Hall, beginning at 7 pm. All Geoscience students who are receiving a scholarship or tuition waiver for 2014-2015 should plan to attend, as well as our graduating seniors receiving academic awards or honors. We look forward to congratulating you on your academic achievements.

Mark Your Calendars II: The Department of Geosciences Year-End Picnic & Party will be held at Beus Pond Park on Friday, April 18, beginning at 4 pm. Food and family fun will be provided by the Geology Club and Sigma Gamma Epsilon. Keep your eyes open for flyers around the department or in the Majors' Room for more information.

ERGO is Now Available:  The Spring 2014 edition of ERGO is now available.  We have placed a couple of copies in the Majors’ Room.  Additional copies are available from the Office of Undergraduate Research (ext 8541) while supplies last.  ERGO is printed annually and highlights undergraduate research conducted at WSU.  Anyone involved in undergraduate research can apply for publication in this journal.  Please visit this page for more information.
