Attendance- and Safeguarding Policy

We want everyone to feel welcome.

We know that safe spaces do not exist in the real world. We exist in the real world though and are thus working with the idea of “Brave Space”.

We are aware that some people feel less easily comfortable than others.

We do our best to create an environment that leads to (more) equity.

We are a self-organised festival in a self-governed space and do not yet have the means to have a professional awareness team or distinguished safer spaces.

However, our teachers are attentive to power dynamics, discrimination and barriers to participation, and will do their best to support participants and address conflicts when they arise. If you experience harm or feel unwell: please speak to the teachers and feel invited to ask for help.

If we notice harm or conflict, we will do our very best to create time and space for discussion, restoration and healing.

If you act in a way that is in conflict with our basic values (queer, feminist, antiracist, caring, accountability) → be prepared for discussions.

Stay hydrated.

Be gentle before you test boundaries.

Only yes means yes.

Balance, Alignment and Inversion

This workshop focuses on the foundations and development of handstand practice through strength, alignment and body awareness. Participants explore balance techniques, weight shifting, posture and coordination while working individually and in pairs.

Through conditioning exercises, drills and playful inversions, we investigate how to build a stable and efficient handstand practice adapted to different levels and bodies. The workshop combines technical training with elements of movement exploration, helping participants develop confidence and ease while upside down.

Exercises can be adapted for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners working on endurance, shapes or transitions. The workshop emphasizes a supportive learning environment, individual progress and the joy of exploring inversion and movement.

Anna Biebl

Anna grew up in Austria and began her artistic journey at the Akademiet For Utæmmet Kreativitet (AFUK) in Copenhagen. She continued her training at the National Institute of Circus Arts (INAC) in Portugal and at Creat in Valencia, where she further developed her technical and creative practice with a focus on aerial acrobatics and partner acrobatics.

Since 2021, she has been working as a freelance circus artist and circus educator, performing in various projects combining vertical rope, dance and acrobatics. She is a member of the collective Circle Circus Circus.

Alongside her performance work, Anna teaches circus classes and workshops for both adults and children. Her teaching focuses on building strength, body awareness and confidence through a playful and supportive approach

examine your technique into the smallest sensations and emotions

Like everything else, aerial acrobatics is not free from the pervasive and inherent power structures of our society. Both historically and in the present, many colonial and patriarchal hierarchies are reproduced within the practice—some quite obvious, others more subtle.

In this workshop, we will closely examine our technique by tuning into even the smallest sensations and emotions. Which movements evoke a sense of freedom and joy, and which ones feel more like control or constraint?

The workshop is supported by readings from a variety of texts and, alongside physical exploration, incorporates writing and awareness exercises.

Please bring something to write with, as well as training-appropriate clothing in which you feel comfortable.

Yolande Sommer

www.yolandesommer.de

Yolande developed an interest in teaching at the age of sixteen and completed her training as a circus educator at eighteen. From that point on, she taught a wide range of circus courses for over ten years and led a children’s circus in Cologne-Kalk.

From the very beginning, her focus has been on supporting people in transforming their own ideas and personal themes into creative expression. Her approach is rooted in staying close to each individual’s story, while maintaining a caring and attentive perspective to ensure that the creative process remains nourishing and supportive for participants.

In recent years, she has developed several workshop concepts from a feminist perspective within the context of circus arts, including Embodied Patriarchy, Reclaim the Cycle, and The Body as an Archive.

– Where Technique Meets Storytelling: Shaping Presence, Tension and Meaning

From Technique to Theatrical Experience, this workshop explores how dramaturgical thinking can support and deepen contemporary circus creation. Through practical exercises, improvisation and feedback, participants investigate storytelling, rhythm, stage presence and audience connection.

Using tools from theatre, writing and devised performance, we explore questions such as: What is the core idea of an act? How do tension, timing and transitions shape audience attention? And how can technique and emotion work together on stage?

Participants may bring existing material or ideas they want to develop. The workshop emphasizes experimentation, collaborative exchange and finding an individual artistic language.

· What is the core idea of my act?

· How do tension, rhythm and timing shape audience attention?

· What story does my body already tell?

· How can transitions, repetition and surprise support my performance?

· How do character, movement and emotional intention interact?

– a playful approach to aerial rope

In this workshop series, we will, over the course of various sessions, dive into the diverse facets of aerial rope, with a focus on sequencing (puzzles) and adrenaline (beats, swings and drops) aiming to provide a well-grounded vocabulary for future practices and creation.

Puzzles will focus on a creative, task-based approach to rope. We will find pathways and connections, climbs and resting positions, and we will create our own sequences with both the familiar and the unknown.

All levels are welcome.

Adrenaline will explore beats, swings and inversions, and generally, how to play with gravity. A familiarity with side and front beats and being able to comfortably invert (bent or straight arms) is recommended.

Rosalía and Malu

Rosalía and Malu are two circus artists based in Vienna.  Rosalía fell in love with rope during her formation at CreatCirc (Valencia) where she learnt under the wing of Rosa Schmidt.

She has taught rope at Espai de Circ and CreatCirc (Valencia), where Malu had also undergo formation with Rosa Schmidt and Melina Benposta, quickly moving onto the dynamic and acrobatic aspect of rope.

Both of them were part of the street arts collective Colectivo Cremaetéreo. Among their teachers were Roque Bisciotti, Giullia Lupelli or Gaia Santuccio.

a new prop, a new way of working

This workshop explores the scaffold as an experimental circus apparatus and movement environment. Combining elements of object manipulation, movement research and contemporary circus practice, participants investigate the scaffold not only as a structure, but as a creative partner.

Through guided improvisation, physical tasks and collaborative exploration, we research balance, weight, rhythm, spatial relationships and different ways of interacting with the apparatus. The workshop encourages participants to discover unusual movement possibilities, images and dynamics emerging from the interaction between body and scaffold.

Rather than focusing on fixed tricks or techniques, the workshop emphasizes experimentation, playfulness and collective research. Participants are invited to approach the scaffold from different perspectives: as architecture, obstacle, support structure, dance partner or moving object.

The workshop is open to movers, circus artists and curious beginners alike. Exercises are adapted to different levels of experience and aim to create a supportive environment for artistic exploration and exchange.

– Whole Body Juggling

This workshop explores the connection between object manipulation, juggling and contemporary movement practices. Instead of focusing only on tricks, we investigate how the entire body can become part of the juggling process.

Through guided improvisation, movement exercises and technical research, participants explore coordination, rhythm, flow and spatial awareness. We work with objects as creative partners, discovering how movement can emerge from the interaction between body, object and space.

Using tools from dance, contemporary circus and physical theatre, the workshop encourages participants to develop a more organic, expressive and playful approach to object manipulation.

Exercises can be adapted to different levels of experience, from beginners to advanced movers and jugglers. The workshop emphasizes experimentation, personal movement language and collective exchange in a supportive environment.

Ariane Oechsner

arianeoechsner.com

is a Vienna-based choreographer and director working at the intersection of circus, contemporary dance, physical theatre and political activism. Ariane’s artistic practice explores how objects and bodies can move together as interactive partners on stage and what they express in our socio-political setting.

– movement, rhythm, and flow

In this workshop, we will explore the connection between martial arts and object manipulation through movement, rhythm, and flow.

We will learn the five basic Kung Fu steps and connect them into fluid combinations, working with contrasts such as slow and fast, up and down, soft and strong.

The goal is to blend the structure and power of martial arts with the fluidity and creativity of object manipulation.

The workshop focuses mainly on staff manipulation and includes:

• Basic spinning techniques

• Contact manipulation fundamentals

• Throws

• Martial arts poses and transitions

• Flow development and movement quality

Peter Smohai

deweirdo.com

I come from a martial arts background with more than 20 years of experience across different disciplines, including active competition in several styles.

In 2012, while living in London, I began training in object manipulation and fire performance at Spinning@. In 2016, I moved to China, where I spent two years training intensively at the Shaolin Temple.

During this time, I developed my vision of combining the soft Yin qualities of contact manipulation with the strong Yang energy of Kung Fu.

After this period of disciplined training, I spent the following five years performing professionally in fire shows across China.

Now based in Vienna, I am developing new concepts and seeking collaborations with artists and movers who want to grow, create, and inspire each other through shared practice and creativity.

– explore your relationship with the apparatus through

a lens of creative autonomy

Five-day intensive offers a technical and creative exploration of pole dance, structured for both complete beginners and experienced practitioners.

Each 90-minute session functions as an independent module, allowing for single-class drop-ins, while the full sequence provides a progressive framework for those attending the entire week.

The curriculum is divided into three distinct phases:

1) Conditioning – a pole-specific warmup focusing on body awareness, joint mobilization, shoulder stability, and core activation.

2) Technical Analysis – an introduction to the physics of movement. This section covers the mechanics of friction, torque, and momentum to ensure safe and efficient execution of elements.

3) Movement Research – a guided improvisation period where technical skills are integrated into personal movement patterns.

Participants explore their relationship with the apparatus through

a lens of creative autonomy. The course aims to build a functional understanding of the pole while fostering an inclusive environment

for movement exploration across all levels of experience.

Oleksii Kolbei

Oleksii is a queer, neurodivergent Ukrainian pole artist currently based in Austria (he/they/no pronouns). His movement practice is built on a foundation of ten years in ballroom dance and five years in pole, where he specializes in blending pole heels with contemporary movement.

Rather than following a strictly traditional path, Oleksii’s approach is rooted in consistent self-exploration and intentional exchanges with contemporary movers who inspire him, alongside various online teacher trainings, workshops and camps.

Since 2023, he has traveled to teach and perform across Georgia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and other countries. For Oleksii, pole is an inherently political practice, and he believes it is essential to acknowledge its history and roots in sex work and club culture.

In his classes, he prioritizes the creation of a safer, inclusive, and supportive environment. He strives to build relationships with his students based on mutual trust and respect, consciously working to dismantle traditional teaching hierarchies in favor of a more collaborative and empowering learning experience.

– Moving Through Connection Partnering in Dance and Circus

In this workshop we are deepening understanding and exploring physical tools to act and react in interaction with others. These interactions become the means for awareness and learning about both, the connection and oneself as well.

Through a process of building trust, we engage with the relation between giving and taking weight. We emphasize the use of gravity and momentum, and investigate the importance of the floor and one’s own axis in partnering.

Using tools from contemporary dance, partnering and partner acrobatics, we engage with different constellations in duos and groups to explore interdependency and collaboration.

The level is adapted to the experience of the participants.

Consent is emphasized and practiced as a base for respectful collaboration.
