Matthew 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your works and glorify your father who is in heaven.” (NASB)

STATEMENT OF FAITH

At City School Atlanta, our faith in Jesus Christ shapes everything we do. The following core beliefs guide our mission, values, and community:

The Bible
We believe the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, is the inspired and inerrant Word of God. It is the final authority for Christian faith and living.
2 Timothy 3:16; John 10:35; 2 Peter 1:21

God
We believe in one true God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) who is the Creator of all and eternally perfect.
Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 1:2; Isaiah 9:6

Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus is fully God and fully man. He was born of a virgin, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and now intercedes for us in heaven.
1 Peter 2:24; Hebrews 9:12; Titus 2:14

The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit lives in all believers, empowering and guiding them in truth, service, and godly living.
John 14:26; Acts 1:8; Romans 12:1–2

Humanity and Sin
We believe all people are made in God's image but fall short because of sin. Only through the Holy Spirit can we be made spiritually alive.
Romans 3:23; John 3:7; Titus 3:5

Salvation
We believe salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Those who believe become children of God.
Ephesians 2:8–9; Galatians 2:16; Colossians 2:13

Church Practices
We believe baptism and the Lord’s Supper are important practices for believers, but they do not save us.
Acts 2:1–4; 1 Corinthians 12:13

The Church
We believe the Church is made up of all who trust in Jesus. Christ is the head of the Church, and each local church governs itself under His leadership.
1 Corinthians 3:11; Ephesians 4:4–7

Christ’s Return
We believe Jesus will return personally and that this hope encourages holy living and faithful service.
1 Thessalonians 1:10; Titus 2:13

Eternity
We believe in the resurrection of all people—believers to eternal life with God, and unbelievers to eternal separation from Him.
Revelation 20:11–15; Daniel 12:2

Marriage and Sexuality
We believe marriage is a covenant between one man (by birth) and one woman (by birth). Sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage.
Genesis 2:18–25; Hebrews 13:4

Compliance with the dress code is a shared responsibility between students, parents/guardians, and the school. Consistent adherence helps maintain the culture of excellence and respect that defines City School Atlanta.

STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE PHILOSOPHY

At City School Atlanta, the classroom is a place for learning. Maintaining an environment that supports the orderly and efficient operation of the school is essential to student success. Creating and sustaining this environment is a shared responsibility among students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

While students are expected to exercise self-discipline and personal responsibility, guidelines and expectations must be in place when those expectations are not met. The teacher is the authority within the classroom and is responsible for maintaining a focused and respectful learning environment. Any behavior that disrupts this authority compromises the educational experience for all students.

Rules and regulations exist to protect the rights of all members of the school community. It is each student's responsibility to be familiar with and follow these expectations. Failure to do so may result in appropriate disciplinary consequences, which may include:

  • Verbal warning or reprimand
  • Silent lunch or lunch detention
  • Parent/guardian conference
  • Physical training (e.g., supervised exercises)
  • Behavior probation
  • Suspension from after-school programs
  • Loss of privileges for activities or events
  • In-school or out-of-school suspension
  • Dismissal from City School Atlanta

City School Atlanta is committed to supporting every student’s right to learn in a safe, respectful, and productive environment. Disruptive or disrespectful behavior that infringes on the learning or safety of others will not be tolerated.

SCHOOL BUS CONDUCT

Riding the school bus is a privilege provided by City School Atlanta (CSA) to support student transportation to and from an assigned bus stop. This service is extended with the expectation that all students will contribute to a safe and respectful environment at all times.

Students are required to follow the Code of Conduct and School Bus Safety Rules:

  • While walking to and from the bus stop
  • While waiting at the bus stop
  • While boarding, riding, and exiting the school bus

Students must remain safe, orderly, and respectful at all times toward the bus driver, fellow passengers, and the vehicle itself. Behavior that endangers others, causes disruptions, or disregards school rules may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or permanent removal from bus privileges.

All students are expected to understand that the bus is an extension of the school environment. The same expectations for behavior and respect apply.

Failure to comply with these standards will be addressed promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers.

MISCONDUCT NOT OCCURRING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY OR AT A SCHOOL-SPONSORED ACTIVITY

City School Atlanta reserves the right to impose disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, for student misconduct that occurs off school property or outside of school-sponsored activities when such behavior has a direct impact on:

  1. The health, safety, or security of students or staff, and/or
  2. The good order and discipline of the school environment.

Off-campus conduct that may warrant disciplinary action includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  1. Behavior that would violate school rules if committed on school property or at a school-sponsored event.
  2. Misconduct where the actual or intended victim is a student enrolled at City School Atlanta.
  3. Misconduct where the actual or intended victim is an immediate family member of a City School Atlanta student.
  4. Misconduct where the actual or intended victim is a school employee.
  5. Misconduct where the actual or intended victim is an immediate family member of a school employee.
  6. Conduct that results in criminal charges or a juvenile court petition, when the school administration determines, by a preponderance of the evidence (i.e., more likely than not), that the student engaged in the behavior underlying those charges.

City School Atlanta is committed to fostering a safe and respectful learning environment both on and off campus. Students are expected to always uphold the school’s standards of conduct.

VAPING AND SMOKING

City School Atlanta is a smoke-free and vape-free environment. To protect the health and well-being of our students, staff, and community, the use, possession, or distribution of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and related paraphernalia is strictly prohibited.

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT AND BULLYING

City School Atlanta is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all students. Any form of bullying or sexual harassment is strictly prohibited and will be addressed promptly and seriously.

Reporting Procedures

If a student believes they have been the victim of bullying or sexual harassment, they are encouraged to report the incident immediately to a trusted staff member, teacher, counselor, or administrator. All reports will be taken seriously and investigated promptly, with appropriate action taken to ensure student safety and well-being.

Bullying (as defined by Georgia law)

Bullying is defined as:

  1. Any willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on another person when accompanied by an apparent present ability to do so; or
  2. Any intentional display of force that would give the victim reason to fear or expect bodily harm.

Bullying may include verbal, physical, or electronic acts that occur on or off campus, including cyberbullying. Bullying is considered a serious offense and will result in disciplinary consequences as outlined in the school’s Code of Conduct.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment in schools is defined as any unwanted conduct of a sexual nature that interferes with a student’s education or creates a hostile or offensive learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Unwelcome sexual advances
  • Requests for sexual favors
  • Verbal, nonverbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature

Sexual harassment can affect any student, regardless of sex, race, or age, and may be committed by peers, staff, or others.

City School Atlanta will not tolerate sexual harassment under any circumstances. Any student found to be engaging in such behavior will face disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion, depending on the severity of the offense.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY

To support a focused and distraction-free learning environment, cell phones, earbuds, headphones, smartwatches (e.g., Apple Watches), and similar devices are strictly prohibited during school hours.

Expectations:

  • All cell phones and smartwatches must be powered off before entering the building.
  • Devices must be turned in at the designated location each morning.
  • Students may not carry or wear these devices at any time during the school day.

Violations:

  • Any unauthorized use or visible presence of these devices will result in confiscation.
  • The confiscated item will be turned over to the Principal or Dean of Students.
  • First Offense: Item will be returned only to a parent or guardian after 24 hours.
  • Repeated Offenses: May result in further disciplinary action, up to out-of-school suspension or withdrawal from City School Atlanta.

City School Atlanta is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal electronic devices.

Communication Guidelines:

  • Parents/guardians needing to contact a student during school hours should call the front office at (404) 963-6804.
  • Students needing to contact a parent/guardian may request permission from an administrator to use the school phone.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

At City School Atlanta, we believe that strong family engagement is essential to student success. Each parent or guardian is required to be actively involved in their child’s education and agrees to the following responsibilities:

  1. Maintain open communication with their child’s teachers and school administrators.
  2. Submit timely notifications and documentation for all student absences.
  3. Inform the Principal immediately of any changes in address, phone number, or emergency contact information.
  4. Attend all discipline-related or teacher-requested conferences in a timely manner.
  5. Provide a quiet, appropriate environment at home for completing homework and studying.
  6. Monitor and review their child’s assignments and homework daily to ensure completion and understanding.
  7. Promote respectful behavior from their child toward all school staff and those in positions of authority.
  8. Actively support their child’s teachers, administrators, and overall educational experience.

Parent collaboration plays a vital role in creating a positive, productive learning environment for all students. We appreciate your partnership.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT FEE

All families are required to pay a monthly Academic Support Fee, determined based on household income. This fee helps offset the cost of essential student activities, including but not limited to:

  • School dances
  • Field trips
  • Awards assemblies
  • Academic competitions
  • Academic support materials
  • Educational seminars
  • Various other school-related events and enrichment activities

The fee is payable by or before the 15th of each month, starting August 1st through May 15th, for a total of 10 months.

Families may also choose to pay the full fee at the beginning of the school year to avoid monthly payments.

NOTE: Failure to make timely payments may result in your child not being allowed to attend school until the balance is brought current.

We encourage families to plan accordingly and reach out to the school office with any concerns regarding payment arrangements.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parents are encouraged to maintain open communication with teachers and administrators regarding their child’s academic progress and behavior. Parents may contact school staff by phone or email to request information or schedule a conference.

Teachers and administrators will respond to parent inquiries within two school days and may arrange a conference if necessary.

Occasionally, a teacher or administrator may initiate a conference with a parent before or after school hours. These meetings are important opportunities for teachers and parents to share valuable information that can support a student’s academic success and personal development.

We believe that strong collaboration between home and school plays a vital role in helping students reach their full potential.

ACADEMICS

Homework/Classwork

Students are expected to complete and submit all homework and classwork assignments on the day they are due. Assignments not submitted on time will receive a grade of zero.

Timely submission of work is essential to academic success and personal responsibility. A consistent pattern of missing or incomplete assignments will prompt a parent-teacher conference to discuss the student's academic progress and determine necessary support or interventions.

Students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers in advance if they are having trouble completing assignments on time.

Make-Up Work

Students who are absent from school are permitted to make up missed assignments. The following guidelines apply:

  1. Excused Absences:
  • Students may make up all missed work for full credit.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to check with each teacher upon return to determine what work was missed.
  1. Unexcused Absences:
  • Students may still complete and submit missed assignments; however, a 30% grade reduction will be applied to all make-up work.
  1. Timeframe for Completion:
  • Students are allowed two school days for each day of absence to complete and submit missed work.
  • Work not submitted within the allotted time will receive a zero.
  1. Due Assignments on Day of Absence:
  • Any assignments that were due on the day of the student’s absence must be submitted on the day of return.

Students are encouraged to be proactive and communicate with their teachers regarding missed work as soon as possible.

Final Exam Exemption

City School Atlanta recognizes and rewards academic achievement, consistent attendance, and positive behavior by offering final exam exemptions to eligible high school students. Exemptions are granted at the discretion of administration and individual teachers.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a final exam exemption, students must meet all the following criteria for each course in which they seek exemption:

  1. Academic Performance

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

At City School Atlanta, we are committed to nurturing the whole student and believe that academic integrity is a cornerstone of lifelong learning. We aim to instill in each student the core values of honesty, trust, responsibility, respect, fairness, and personal honor. These values should guide the actions of students, faculty, staff, and parents both within and beyond the classroom.

Academic Misconduct is defined as any action that provides an unfair academic advantage to a student, affects their grades, or compromises the integrity of their academic record. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Lying, cheating, stealing, or plagiarism
  • Receiving or providing unauthorized assistance, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Submitting another student’s work as your own
  • Copying or comparing assignments
  • Using or pasting content from the internet without proper citation
  • Allowing others (students or adults) to complete your work

Acts of academic misconduct will result in a zero (0%) grade on the assignment with no opportunity for a make-up. In the case of misconduct on a final exam, the student will receive an automatic failure of the course.

We expect every member of the school community to uphold these principles and contribute to a culture of integrity and excellence.

STANDARDIZED TESTING AND PROMOTION & DETENTION

City School Atlanta administers the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) to all students grades 3 through 12 at the beginning (August) and end (March) of each academic year. These assessments are used diagnostically to evaluate student progress, inform instruction, and develop Individualized Performance Plans (IPPs) at both the student and grade levels.

In accordance with the Georgia Promotion, Placement, and Retention Law (O.C.G.A. §§ 20-2-282 through 20-2-285) and State Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.11, the following promotion standards apply:

  • Third Grade: Students must achieve grade-level performance in reading and mathematics on the ITBS and/or an academy-approved assessment, in addition to meeting promotion standards established by City School Atlanta, to be promoted to fourth grade.
  • Fifth Grade: Students must achieve grade-level performance in reading and mathematics on the ITBS and/or an academy-approved assessment and meet all City School Atlanta promotion criteria to be promoted to sixth grade.
  • Eighth Grade: Students must achieve grade-level performance in reading and mathematics on the ITBS and/or an academy-approved assessment and fulfill City School Atlanta’s promotion requirements to be promoted to ninth grade.

These policies ensure that students are prepared for the academic demands of the next grade level and are supported with appropriate interventions when necessary.
