Messrs Wallis & Son,
The French Gallery,
120 Pall Mall, S.W.1.
Dear Sirs,
I am directed by Mr. de Laszlo to write you regarding your account in connection with the Exhibition,[1] and to say that he is not at all satisfied with some of the items, and would like to have further explanation.
Law Charges – Please state nature of these charges and shew details.
Carriage on pictures fom Paris £17.13.6 –
Is it to be understood that this amount covers the whole of the carriage on the pictures from Paris to London and back to Paris again?
With regard to the number of invitations sent out. It is noticed there are three amounts for stamps and die stamped envelopes making a total of £17.18.9, which represents nearly 3,000 invitations having been sent out. Will you please say if there were 3000 invitations sent out.
Photographing Gallery £4.4.. – Mr. de Laszlo did not see any of these photographs, and shall be glad if you will send them to him. Also he considered the charge of £1. 1. 0 a plate very excessive.
Sundry petty and incidental expenses £3.15.0,
Will you please give details of these expenses.
With regard to the Skylight Awning, Mr. de Laszlo understood from your Mr. Winchester that the awning would be useful to the Gallery after Mr. de [László’s]
[Page 2]
Exhibition was over, and fully expected that you would bear a portion of the cost.
Mr. de Laszlo has received the enclosed letter dated 18th August 1923 from Baroness Baeyens,[2] from which you will note that she states that the plate glass with which the portrait [2825] was framed has not been returned with the portrait. As Mr. de Laszlo is responsible that the portraits arrive safely back to their destination in good order, and are placed back exactly as they were when they were taken away, he will be glad if you will make enquiries about this plate glass and see that it is placed in the frame with the portrait as it was when it was collected. Kindly return the enclosure with your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Secretary.
P.S. It is also noted that J. Chenues a/c for collecting pictures in Paris and packing & forwarding is £4.12.0, but Pottier’s a/c for returning pictures to Paris – the pictures all being in the Gallery – is £5.18.2, a great difference between the charges. Will you please explain this.
