Activity 7.4: Colonial Slavery RAFT

Modern rafts are a great way to float down rivers with rapids and unpredictable currents. The raft you will use will work in a similar way, but instead of a river, you’ll be guiding your way through a writing assignment.

Using what you learned from the article you read and analyzed in Activity 7.3, you will be learning to create a written assignment and responding to this lesson’s big question.

I can...compose a written assignment from a variety of perspectives that demonstrates my knowledge of slavery in the American Colonies.

Essential Question:

What roles did the Europeans and West Africans play in the development of the Atlantic slave trade?

To complete Activity 7.4 please follow the steps below:


STEP 1: You need to write about what you have learned, but you will be taking a unique approach to your writing. It is called a RAFT: You will consider the your role, your audience, the format of what you’re writing, and the topic you are writing about. Respond to the four (4) tasks below:

  1. Role: What role are you playing? Are you a slave? Artist? Politician? A by-stander?

  1. Audience: Who should you consider as the audience for this writing? Other students? Parents? Local community? School board? Other characters in the text?

  1. Format: Is it a diary entry and you’re writing as if you are living through it? Or is what you’re are writing like a newspaper article and you’re an all-star reporter?

  1. Topic: This is the when, who, or what that will be the focus/subject of your writing assignment. When does your event you are writing about take place? Who are the characters? What is it all about?

STEP 2: Using your responses to the RAFT, start writing your assignment. Be sure that it includes all 4 parts of the RAFT.

STEP 3: Respond to the following question:

Based upon everything you have learned about slavery, what roles did the Europeans and Africans play in the development of the Atlantic slave trade?
