MOROCCO EARTHQUAKE DISASTER RELIEF - DIRECTORY OF NGOs
An estimated 300,000 people are thought to have been impacted by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook southern central Morocco late on Friday, September 8, 2023. Small towns and villages were destroyed, and UNESCO World Heritage site Marrakech sustained deaths, injuries, and fallen buildings. At last check, more than 2,500 people are dead and thousands more injured, many critically, and still counting. The ultimate death toll is likely to be much higher.
Earthquakes disproportionately affect marginalized communities particularly young women and girls due to pre-existing inequalities. Such vulnerable groups often face barriers to accessing resources, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, which become exacerbated in the aftermath of a seismic event. Gender-based violence can rise, educational opportunities diminish, and healthcare access becomes compromised.
In light of the critical situation in Morocco, consider donating to relief efforts by supporting local, grassroots, community-led NGOs. Their efforts are immediate and they face fewer logistical challenges and cultural barriers that can make international NGOs less effective in dealing with the needs of the local people. Your contribution can make a significant difference in providing immediate aid and long-term recovery support to those affected. This is a list of individual efforts/NGOs that are doing good work on the ground in Morocco.**
