WHEN A MIRACLE IS NOT ENOUGH

John 5:1-18

There are many people who are living in a seemingly hopeless situation.  A failing marriage, a terminal illness, or a financial crisis could all lead us to feel overwhelmed and hopeless.  We try our best to stay positive and try various solutions but often hit more dead ends leading to despair.  Many believe that if God would miraculously change their circumstance, then life would be better off.  In today’s passage, we will see that is not always the case.

  1. A HOPELESS SITUATION (v. 2-5)

  1. A MIRACULOUS ENCOUNTER (v. 6-9)

  1. A SINFUL DECISION (v. 13-15)

  1. A TRAGIC END (v. 16-18)

Miracles in themselves do not produce faith because they do not change the condition of the heart.  After spending 38 years as a cripple, a healed man turned his back on Christ by choosing to follow the same religion that previously condemned him. The Jewish leaders used this miracle to build their case against Christ because it occurred on the Sabbath. Today, let us not be like the crippled man or the religious leaders. Let us not seek signs and miracles, instead let seek the source of every blessing, Jesus.
