Dear Mr. de Laszlo,

I have this morning a note from your secretary regarding Sir Charles Markham’s account.[1]

I was surprised after what I said to you that you sent back that cheque on the plea that it was undated. It was, I think, not a very wise move. However, we wrote a very tactful little letter to Sir Charles on Tuesday last, and I think that he cannot but reply to it within the next few days.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

WP Winchester,

P.A. de Laszlo, Esq.,

3, Fitzjohn’s Avenue, N.W.3.

[In the artist’s hand]

This affair is most odious to me  I never had such similar experience. In reply to his letter I wish to state that I remember that he did not wished [sic] a large picture  but mentioned the one of Mrs Harmsworth [4770]  who he saw the portrait of Mrs  Dugdale [possibly [9834]] . I cannot remember that he definitely decided on the Head & shoulders with Hand  other wise I would  [illegible] have ordered a larger size  and exactly the same size [illegible] Mrs Dugdale.

I do not wish to have any future correspondence with this gentleman  who if when he saw the portrait  unfinished could have made some remarks as he knew what Head & shoulders is like, I understand you explained him this at my Exh:[2]

If he wishes to accept a larger picture for the same price for head & shoulders and must to have ask me  not to paint the size I did I do not accept the full Honorarium due to me

Regarding the cheque I have returned I did so as I could not want [illegible] not to return his undated cheque  I send you copy of my [illegible]  of wish [illegible words] till Sunday
