State Junior Roller Derby Team

Tryouts and Training

Hi everyone. Mandus and Troublesome here from The Blue Mountains Junior Roller Derby League. We are both so excited and honoured to be yet again appointed as the Team Manager and Team Coach for the 2019, NSW/ACT, State Junior Roller Derby team. Last year it was our goal to put together a team of the  absolute best junior roller derby skaters from these two states and take the Championships by Storm. That we certainly did, and our intentions for this year’s Champs will be no different.

The Championships this year will all take place at the Mt Warren Sports Centre, Mt Warren QLD, from Friday the 8th of November until Sunday the 10th of November.

Tryouts for this team will take place on Sunday the 4th of August at the Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Stadium in Windsor NSW between 11am and 2pm. Junior Roller Derby Skaters who are 17 years or under by the conclusion of the tournament are welcome to apply. Skaters must be JRDA level 3 skaters which is Full Contact WFTDA rules. Please Note that this is equivalent to Skate Victoria level 4, NOT Skate Victoria level 3.

Our goal for the state team is pretty much the same as last year. From the tryout, a team plus possibly up to three reserve skaters will be selected to participate in the Australian National Championships. The reserve skaters will not be guaranteed any track time during the competition but will be placed on the roster in case  someone gets injured or for another reason can no longer participate in the tournament.

We are planning to put together a highly competitive team where every individual skater in the team has demonstrated exceptional ability and skill, commitment and good sportspersonship. This may mean that we do not take a full roster to the championship but rather take a team that is highly competitive and truly represents the best that NSW and ACT have to offer in junior roller derby skaters. Having won the Championships last year, we have our title to defend and we intend to give it our best shot.

You can find the registration form on our Facebook Pages: NSW/ACT Jnr(Aus Nationals),  NSW/ACT Junior roller derby Full Contact Sunday Training, and Junior Derby bout information for NSW and ACT. You need to have completed the registration form by Friday the 2nd of August if you want to participate in the tryouts. If you are selected for the team then we will put you on the roster and submit it to the Champs organisers. If you have any further questions either post them on the NSW/ACT Jnr(Aus Nationals) page or email Mandus at the following address:  enebergmandy@gmail.com

As a heads up for the tryouts here are some of the things that we will be looking for. As a minimum requirement we will expect that every skater can execute at least the following:

  • Jackie Daniels Drill
  • Crossovers both forwards and backwards skating
  • Lateral movements
  • Transitions both directions
  • Track awareness and solid understanding of game play/strategy.

Fitness too will be seriously assessed this year. We have seen so many highly skilled junior skaters over the past year which sometimes are let down by their own fitness. Don’t underestimate how being fit can really give you that extra edge to your game and to your team.

Once the team has been selected it will be expected that the selected skaters attend the training sessions at the Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Stadium. These training times will be announced shortly. We are hoping to have at least three training sessions before the champs but there is a lot going on for Derby this time of year so we will have to see how we can fit it all in.

As we have no budget at all for this event, we do request that each individual skater contributes $20 for the tryout and $20 for each training session. This will hopefully cover the cost  for the hire of the venue with hopefully some money left over for those who do not have a team shirt and maybe we can get a guest trainer to do a boot camp for us at one of our training sessions like we did last year.

For insurance purposes, we are fortunate once again that the Blue Mountains Junior Roller Derby League have agreed to host both the tryouts and the training sessions. This is something you may need to inform your own league’s insurers of.

As for travel to the event and accommodation, each individual skater and their parents/carers will need to organise this and it is once again at the skater’s own expense. If skaters’ parents or carers are unable to chaperone their skater to the event please talk to us ASAP as we may be able to work something out.

Unfortunately we do not have time for any fundraising for this event so this will be left to the individual skaters and their parents/carers to organise.  If there is however a parent/carer that has time to organise some fundraising for the team that would be wonderful and you are more than welcome to contact us so we can get that ball rolling.

Well I think that is more than enough information for the time being. Please do not hesitate to contact us if something is not clear or we have forgotten an important piece of information. And in case you were not part of the team last year our team is fondly known as

                                        The NASCWoTs!!

                                   Say What….NASCWoTs.
