Mach 30 #EngineerSpeak Hangout Oct 16, 2014
Discussion Topic: Roadmap
Attending: J, Greg, Chris, Jeremy, Wilton, Matt
Start: 2215
End: 2305
Minutes:
- Greg - Reviewed the past few weeks of progress for Wilton who hasn’t been to an #engineerSpeak in a while.
- J - Reminded everyone that we downselected to Propulsion, Aerodynamics and Structures as the 3 subsystems as candidates for future
- J - So what about the process? I have an idea of how to move forward. How about using “cardstorming” three times, one for each area.
- Card-Storming Assumptions:
- The limitation of scope of project is capped at the scale of high-power rocketry
- None of the ideas below can be controlled by Export restrictions.
Propulsion | Aerodynamics | Structures |

- J - I’d like to try out some synchronous and asynchronous work on this
- J - Let’s start with the “STRUCTURES” category:
- DIGITAL FABRICATION OF COMPONENTS AND MECHANISMS
- Matt - Reason: I and many other folks can contribute to this area. Structures and mechanisms.
- Matt - Concept is how to use the burgeoning maker community of digital fabrication. There are aspects of sharing designs globally to speed the design iterations
- Matt - most STEM programs involve model rockets somewhere
- easy to steer clear of EC boundaries
- AN OPEN PLATFORM OF STANDARDS (Like LEGOS)
- PAYLOAD MOUNT FOR ARDUINOS
- UPGRADED ELECTRONICS PAYLOAD STRUCTURES - LIKE FOR FIN-FACING CAMERAS
- FABRICATION IN MAKERSPACES WITH LOCAL TOOLS
- EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES
- SOFTWARE TOOLS - CODECAD AND OPENSOURCECAD (CADQUERY)
- COLLAPSIBLE AND EXPANDABLE MECHANISMS (“ORAGAMI ROCKET”)
- THE “BLACK BOX” FOR MODEL ROCKET (CHEAP, DURABLE, RECOVERABLE, LIKE :www.carbonorigins.com)
- HARDWARE TOOLS AND JIGS
- SCALABLE PARTS, AND THE ASSOCIATED STANDARDS FOR USING THEM
- SOFTWARE - STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS TOOLS (LIKE FEA, NASTRAN, etc.)
- (linked to propulsion as well) PROPULSION TEST STAND STRUCTURE
- (stretching outside the box a bit) SCALE MODEL OF A SIMULATED LAUNCH COMPLEX. FULL GROUND OPS SIMULATION
- (linked in to aerodynamics as well) FIN DESIGN BASED ON J’S MASTERS THESIS (OPTIMIZING SUPERSONIC STRUCTURES TO PREVENT FLUTTER)
- STRUCTURAL TESTING (DESTRUCTIVE OR OTHERWISE)
- STRUCTURAL DESIGN BEST PRACTICES FOR MANUFACTURING, AND OPERATIONS, (AKA LIFECYCLE CONSIDERATION)
- STRUCTURAL INTERACTIONS WITH THE GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT
- MATERIALS TESTING FORM AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE (UV, THERMAL, (eventually) VACUUM
- STRUCTURAL INCORPORATION OF A “MISSION OBJECTIVE” (like rube goldburg, or scientific experiment)
- (linked to electrical/power) HOW TO INCORPORATE POWER STORAGE INTO STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS
- ADDRESSING REUSABILITY CONCERNS WITH RESPECT TO STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS
- HIGH-RELIABILITY RECOVERY SYSTEM (MECHANISMS)
- ...and more to post asynchronously on the ODE wiki <link TBD>
