History of Hatred

Description

Why have certain groups in history found it useful to hold other groups in contempt because of ethnicity, color or customs? What people have thought themselves better than others and why? This course will consider the issues of race, religion, gender and attitudes towards ‘the other’ in the US and globally. Cases where inhumanity has run rampant such as Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, Nazi Germany, Armenia and the US will be studied in an effort to grasp the reasons for certain human actions, and inaction in the face of them. Bigotry remains a reality in this world, so how it has evolved to the present and why is worth understanding.
