The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Sacramento State is offering a free tutoring program for K-12 school students. The mission of the Math Tutoring Buddies (MTB) Program is to provide free, high-quality one-on-one tutoring to K-12 school students in the local community that will enrich the learning opportunities for both university and K-12 school students.
For Parents: Math Tutoring Buddies is a free tutoring service provided by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, at Sacramento State. This program relies on multiple sources of funding, such as ASI Student Employment Grant, Instructionally Related Activities. The program appreciates any donations. Donation Page Link
Note for Parents/ Guardians: Parents/ Guardians are required to supervise their children during the tutoring sessions. Parents/ Guardians please complete the Release of Liability form before the first tutoring session.

Program Goals
The following are the program goals for the Math Tutoring Buddies Program:
- Support K-12 school students in mathematics learning through one-to-one interaction,
- Strengthen Sac State students’ mathematical communication skills,
- Provide mentoring opportunities for local K-12 school students to gain access to higher education.
The objective of the Math Tutoring Buddies Program is to improve the mathematics literacy for K-12 school students and provide a window to higher education through a positive mentoring experience from Sac State tutors.
K-12 school students will benefit from this program, specifically by:
- Learning and expanding mathematical vocabularies and concepts in a one-to-one setting,
- Imagining, practicing, and testing solutions to problems,
- Improving confidence in mathematics literacy and practices,
- Learning and gaining awareness of higher education.
Program Outcomes
- Increase K-12 school students’ proficiency, knowledge, and skills in mathematics,
- Enhance K-12 school students’ study and learning skills that can be applied broadly,
- Increase K-12 school student’s awareness of STEM higher education,
- Expand Sac State student’s mathematical knowledge, interest, and skills, and
- Strengthen Sac State student’s pedagogical knowledge, interest, and skills.
Meet the Math Tutoring Buddies Mentors
Athena My name is Athena Butron and I am in my Junior year at Sacramento State majoring in Mathematics with a teaching emphasis. This is my first year with MTB but I hope to learn and gain teaching techniques to become a High School Math teacher. I am a College Corps fellow. | |
Benjamin Hi, my name is Benjamin, I am a Junior here at Sacramento State majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Statistics. This is the start of my first year tutoring for MTB, I am excited to be helping students with math problems and am looking forward to building upon my math skills at the same time. | |
Daniel Hi, my name is Daniel, and I'm a senior at Sac State. My major is math and I have minors in statistics and economics. This is my first year tutoring at MTB, and I hope to help students understand and enjoy doing math. | |
Elaiza Hi! My name is Elaiza, and I am a senior majoring in Child and Adolescent Development. This is my first year tutoring at MTB, and I am excited to work with students and support you in Math! When I was younger, I struggled with Math too. However, after tutoring students last year, I realized that Math is not as scary as it may seem. Once you learn the right strategies and understand the steps, it can become much easier. I am here to support, encourage, and motivate you as you learn and build confidence in your Math skills. A little about me: I have a 6-year-old son who is in 1st grade, and I love all kinds of desserts—especially chocolate! In the future, I hope to become a teacher and eventually a college professor. I am looking forward to learning and working with all of you! | |
James Hi, I am James Tokunaga, and I am new to MTB. Although this is my first semester working at MTB, I have tutored 5th graders before in the fall of 2021. Looking forward to meeting everyone and working with you. I’m passionate about tutoring and research projects, along with running the Math Club on campus. | |
Ramiro My name is Ramiro, and I am a third-year student at Sacramento State studying Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. This is my first year tutoring at MTB, though I have previous experience helping my younger brothers with their studies. I look forward to improving my tutoring skills while helping students gain confidence and a stronger understanding of math. I am a College Corps fellow. |
