Here are several other regularly scheduled youth Nordic opportunities in this area (and a little beyond) that you might consider for your family this winter, in addition to the Blackwater BKL program:
Andover Outing Club Ski Jumping Program. This is a local ski jumping program for kids in the BKL age group. Kids who jump and skate ski race can compete in a sport called Nordic combined. One of our BKL skiers (Jacques) is a member and his family speaks highly of the program.
Bretton Woods BKL program. The Bretton Woods BKL runs on Sundays from 1/8 through early March, for grades 1 to 8. This program is a great, welcoming group that practices in an unparalleled location, near the Mount Washington Hotel. The instruction is volunteer led and really effective, with opportunities for racing. Our family has participated for several years, along with doing the Blackwater program; sadly, we can’t do it this year. The Bretton Woods program meets on Sundays, from 10:30 to 11:45, and offers seasonal equipment use for a nominal fee, as well as free passes for adults who help out. It’s a great deal, too, at $75 for one kid ($50 for additional kids) for the season.
Great Glen BKL Club. The Great Glen BKL for grades 1-8 meets Sundays 1:30 to 3:30, January 8 into March). Includes race training for older kids. Looks as good as Bretton Woods. Nominal fee rental equipment, high quality instruction, at a great location and price ($40 per child, $35 for more than 1 kid).
Hopkinton Middle School Nordic Team. Hopkinton resident students in grades 7-8 may participate in the Hopkinton Middle School Nordic Ski team, which begins its practices on 12/6 at 3 p.m. The season runs through February vacation, and convenes generally Tuesdays through Fridays after school, with meets on some Saturdays and on some school days.
Jackson Biathlon Youth Program. According to the website, youth instruction in target shooting and skate ski racing is available for kids, ages 9-12 and 13-18 during the winter.
Waterville Nordic Kids. The Waterville website describes the program as geared to kids, ages 5-12, and welcomes single time participants at $20 per session, as well as seasonal participants (at $170 for 10 weeks 1/7- early March). There are two sessions each Saturday, starting Jan 7, from 9:30 to 10:30 for beginners, and from 10:30 to noon for intermediate skiers. The website promises kid fun races twice per month.
