Dear Town Meeting Member,

I urge you to vote YES on Article 13. Beyond the zoning violations and inhumane conditions already documented at the ICE facility, this issue also affects Burlington’s reputation and economic future. When our town is in the news for illegal detentions and human rights abuses, it makes Burlington less attractive to the very businesses and commercial investors we rely on for tax revenue.

This facility is not only out of compliance with its original approvals, it is also out of step with Burlington’s image as a community that welcomes business, innovation, and families.

And most importantly, Burlington is a diverse community; nearly one in five of our residents were born outside the United States. An illegal prison in our town does not represent who we are, nor does it reflect the values of fairness and dignity we want for ourselves and our neighbors.

Please vote YES on Article 13 to protect Burlington’s reputation, resources, and residents.
