French 4.2


French 4.2 is a course designed to teach French on an Intermediate Low to Medium level. French information and directions form much of the course.

By the end of this course, students will be able to speak a variety of uncomplicated communicative tasks, and include personal details, responding to direct questions or requests, and ask simple questions to provide personal needs. Using the language alphabet, they can write familiar short simple communications, compositions, or requests that are loosely connected. Students may reference a variety of tense, but write primarily in present tense with basic sentence organization. Students will listen for contextual words and can comprehend one sentence construction with comprehension with some understanding of oral content from advanced speakers, practice reading short connected texts and derive some meaning from descriptive and narrative topics.

Content in the course includes discussion about art, technology, the press, the medical system in France, the environment, jobs and careers. Students study the passive voice, the present participles, gerunds, present and past conditional, subjunctive, and past subjunctive.

Expectations for the student include completing writing and speaking assessments using video, active engagement in their own learning, practicing vocabulary over time, comprehending grammar patterns, using various forms of verbs, participating in simple conversations and speaking prompts, analyzing and comparing cultural products, practices and perspectives between French speakers and Americans.

  • Pronunciation: Plus and plus (when to pronounce the final s)

Unit 10: Technology and the Internet

  • Vocabulary: Modern technology and internet; The internet, the law, and our rights
  • Grammar: Relative pronouns; Tout and its various forms
  • Culture/History: Media and social networks
  • Pronunciation: Difficult letters x, y, & z

Unit 11: The Written Press

  • Vocabulary: The written press; Audio/visual
  • Grammar: The passive voice; Present and past conditional + hypotheses
  • Culture/History: WW2; La chanson de Roland (Epic poem)
  • Pronunciation: Spelling & pronunciation differences

Unit 12: At the Doctor’s Office

  • Vocabulary: The medical system in France; At the doctor’s office
  • Grammar: Present participles and Gerund; Cardinal and ordinal numbers
  • Culture/History: Health in France
  • Pronunciation: Numbers 5, 6, 8 and 10 pronunciation rule

Unit 13: Environment and Pollution

  • Vocabulary: The protection of our environment; Pollution
  • Grammar: Subjunctive: what is it _ how to form it; Subjunctive with irregular verbs
  • Culture/History: Trash separation and disposal
  • Pronunciation: S sounds in -tion, -sion, -ssion, -xion, and sc words

Unit 14: Social Challenges

  • Vocabulary: Social challenges; Immigration and racism
  • Grammar: When to use the subjunctive + ; Past subjunctive; impersonal  expressions
  • Culture/History: Colonialism and its consequences in modern life
  • Pronunciation: K, ck, ch words

Unit 15: College Preparation

  • Vocabulary: College preparation; The importance of learning a foreign language
  • Grammar: Expressions that indicate the future tense + near future; infinitives preceded by à, de or nothing + the past infinitive
  • Culture/History: May 1968; Les Grandes Écoles (Ivy league and specialized schools)
  • Pronunciation: French & Francophone accents

Unit 16: Looking for a Job

  • Vocabulary: Looking for a job; Jobs of the future
  • Grammar: Nouns that change in masc. & fem.; Simple future + anterior future
